CHICAGO BORN LOCAL ARTIST CREATES BEAUTY THROUGH NOSTALGIA WHILE PORTRAYING DECADENCE AND DISCONTENT

ART EXHIBITION: Stay Sweet: A Site-specific mixed-media exhibition by Kirsten Rae Simonsen OPENING RECEPTION: Friday, July 2, 4-8 PM EXHIBITION DATES: July 2-August 21, 2010

HONOLULU, HAWAI’I-thirtyninehotel announces the opening of a new exhibition of muralsand installations by local artist and educator Kirsten Rae Simonsen.

At the root of thirtyninehotelʼs mission is art and music. Founded by creative visionariesand actively directed by 21st-century bohemians, thirtyninehotel continues to support thearts by offering preeminent DJs and visual artists the opportunity to experiment with their craft and providing the local arts community with the chance to connect with artists whoare practicing and exhibiting their work internationally.

In her debut solo exhibition at thirtyninehotel, Chicago born local artist Kirsten RaeSimonsen explores concepts of transgression and debasement, nostalgia and hope, thesadness of the suburbs, the disappointing party, and the fear of (and desire for) theunknown. She returns over and over again to the theme of spoiled party girls of all ages.

Most of the personalities in this exhibition are based to some extent on thefemale characters in the “reality” television show The Hills. The show portrays wealthy, spoiled, and decadent adult women acting mostly like little girls, airing their discontentsin front of mostly blurred Los Angeles backgrounds. There is little meaningful dialogue, but many lengthy reaction shots involving pouting, nostril flaring, and crying in luxurioussurroundings.

Much of Ms. Simonsenʼs work incorporates drawn text, which at first often reads asmundane, bland, even saccharine pleasantries. However, a sense of longing andsadness pervades these writings. The text pieces in this exhibition are all frominscriptions in her high school yearbooks. She grew up in the suburbs of middle America, and the writings capture the desire of young people to hold onto anything they perceiveas authentic, meaningful, or good. They expose feelings of both admiration and jealousy,as well hope, fear, and regret.
