The Mendonca Building's Courtyard is open again for a First Friday celebration! As usual, there will be music, mixed media work by three returning artists, and refreshments.

Joan Dubanoski is interested in nature's patterns and the relation of color to these patterns. A sort of geometry exists among these variables which is challenging to capture and express. She releases the beauty of these natural designs through digital imaging, with prints on watercolor paper and canvas.

Edgardo Garcia II will be performing a live painting demonstration for July 3rd/First Friday and will have a collection of prints, Limited Editions and Original Oils available. He has gained popularity with his interpretations of the Honu or the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle but has quickly attracted new fans with his versions of the Clownfish, Koi fish, Lotus Flowers, and Starfish. Classically trained, he continues to stun viewers with his renditions of sunsets and moonlit nights.

Martine Aceves-Foster photographs in digital form as well as film and produces fine art giclée prints in large format, using fade-resis tant archival quality inks on 100 percent cotton, acid-free, photo rag paper. By exploring the play of light and shadow, color and form, these photos present the photographer’s extraordinary perceptions of “flower as metaphor,” flowers as people rarely pause to experience them, as well as images of people and places encountered in her travels, which invite viewers to weave a narrative about where the people are, what has brought them there and where they are headed. Her mother, as an artist, instilled in Aceves-Foster the practice of looking at the world through finger frames, so the camera came as a natural extension of her way of viewing her surroundings. From high school when she first learned to develop black and white film, the camera became a means to record and communicate. After pursuing photography mostly on her own, Aceves-Foster’s work first debuted at the Artists of Hawaii 2007 exhibition at the Honolulu Academy of Arts. She has since exhibited at Nohea Island Arts, the Honolulu Club, Kalapawai Café and South Street Gallery among other venues.

Original art work is displayed and Box Dinners are provided for sale by Kate Wagner in her Starpoint Café.

Fred Gayagas will be on stage with his familiar music and audience interaction. He welcomes your participation with music or hula.

Enter into the Chinatown Courtyard on Smith Street through the bamboo at the Blue Dragon Gate or from Maunakea Street. This event is free and open to the public.
