The Mendonca Building's Courtyard is open again for a First Friday celebration! As usual, there will be music, mixed media work by 5 returning artists, and refreshments.

Paul Forney was born & raised in Hawaii and has been drawing and painting since he can remember. He was the kid in school that was always in trouble for "doodling" instead of listening. For a time on the mainland, his canvases were water tanks and storage towers. The whole time he was away, he wanted to come back to Hawaiian roots and focus on his love of the islands and the ocean through his artwork. You can also see his “surf art” on his van and on the fence at the Zoo. Ask him about the story behind each of his pieces.

Henry Ha’o is also returning to the Courtyard. He was recognized in 1969 as the youngest artist to be awarded a commission by the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts at age 16. An accomplished watercolorist and oil painter, he now translates the local scenery and tradition of hula through acrylic paint on canvas. His bol d brushwork and subtle injections of color bring to life the beauty of the sea, the mystery of the mountains and the grace of the hula. He paints in traditional as well as contemporary style. He also can be found at “Art on the Zoo Fence” on Saturdays.

Denise Mollison appeared on TV several months ago telling how her home business of creating and selling dolls came to a screeching halt due to government regulations. Not to be thwarted, she began a new business of miniature purses, which she will be displaying for sale. Come to see the many creative uses they can have.

Shayne Turner, will be showing her “Grand Strands” again, with many new pieces. Crafted individually by hand in beautiful Temple Valley, each unique piece celebrates many of nature’s own creations, reflecting places and colors of our Islands.

Jules Schaper, joining her husband again, will be showing her unique and very colorful batik like paintings on rice paper, mostly with a Hawaiian theme. Additional work of hers can be seen on Printscapes.com.

Otis Schaper, surfer, surfboard builder, husband, father, singer/songwriter has been living in Hawaii since 1987. While managing surfboard production at The Factory in Wahiawa and raising nine year-old Kawehi with his wife Jules, Schaper still finds time to write songs and perform occasionally. Returning to Chinatown Courtyard for the third time, he will be featuring tunes from his current solo recording effort, some new unrecorded favorites and select covers. Otis recorded a classic rock flavored CD titled “Meet The Strangers” with his band of 12 years, The Strangers, in 2008. CDs will be available in the Courtyard during the event or at CD Baby, http://cdbaby.com/cd/thestrangers, or on iTunes.

Original art work is displayed and Box Dinners are provided for sale by Kate
Wagner
in her Starpoint Cafe.

Enter into the Chinatown Courtyard on Smith Street through the bamboo
at the Blue Dragon Gate or from Maunakea Street. This event is free
and open to the public.
