The Mendonca Building's Courtyard is open again for a First Friday celebration! As usual, there will be music, mixed media art, refreshments and a book signing, all with a Hawaiiana theme in honor of LEI DAY!

LYNNE BOYER is new to First Friday in the Courtyard but has painted there for other events. Lynne is both a plein-air and studio painter. She resides ten months of the year in Hawaii and two months in Hungary. Her favorite medium is oil on canvas and linen. She was born with a keen interest in visual arts and started drawing and painting at an early age. Lynne grew up on Oahu and became a World Champion surfer winning the titles in 1978 & 1979, even though her interest in the arts never waned. Though a primarily self-taught artist, she has taken a number of university art courses and participated in various workshops led by established artists. Her experience and talent in fine art, as well as her familiarity with the ocean and her love of nature, give her paintings a unique perspective that reflects the beauty and power of our ever-changing world.

SYD VIERRA comes to the Courtyard from the Big Island to share his woodworking gift with us. A life long artist, he has been a woodturner since 2001 when he bought his first lathe. He is now an active member of the AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF WOODTURNERS and the local Hawaiian chapter of Big Island Woodturners. He is presently the only woodturner in Hawaii who makes translucent dyed wood bowls. With bowls in collections in almost every state and many overseas, he most enjoys doing the Hawaiian forms that are true to tradition. Every piece is one of a kind and can currently be seen in other Galleries and retail stores around the Islands. His reputation precedes him.

A professional photographer for 20 years, HEATHER TITUS, has studied in Hawaii both in community colleges and been mentored by other professional photographers. Her photography has graced the covers of Honolulu Magazine, Hawaiian Airlines and Aloha Airlines in-flight magazines and used by the Hawaiian Visitors Bureau. She is well known, particularly on the Windward side, for her two “coffee table” books, which she will have for sale and signing in the Courtyard. She uses Hawaiian poetry and proverbs to relate life with nature and enrich the reader’s spirit.

BARBARA EBERHART, a professional artist and teacher, returns to the Courtyard with her Hawaiian flowers. All kinds, all sizes, all beautiful20and all are appropriate for Lei Day display. Not content with only canvas, Barbara’s paintings can also be found on large wall murals, 3 panel screens, cards and uses many methods- pencil, oil, acrylic, pastels and watercolors. She is bright and vibrant and so is her work!

JOHN JOHNSON, a conservationist and educator is new to the Courtyard but you may know that John is a freedive photographer whose international award-winning works have appeared in the Smithsonian Institute, the Natural History Museum of London, as well as many local publications such as Hawaii Skin Diver, Star Bulletin, and the Honolulu Advertiser. See his website at OneBreathPhotography.com and join him in the world under the waterline. Or just come to Chinatown to see a sample of his amazing images all captured with one breath underwater.

TINA NOELANI YOUNG returns in May with her Luscious Lanikai Jam’s and Jellies. They are made from her homegrown mangos, bananas and lilikoi in Lanikai. Try a sample of her homemade mango jam, mango butter and other delicious concoctions with cream cheese.

Original artwork is displayed and Box Dinners are provided for sale in the Starpoint Café by KATE WAGNER.

FRED GAYAGAS will be back on stage in May to entertain and encourage participation musically. He is available for your private parties as well. As you walk down Pauahi or Hotel Street, listen for and follow his music into the Courtyard.

Enter into the Chinatown Courtyard on Smith Street through the bamboo at the Blue Dragon Gate or from Maunakea Street. This event is free and open to the public.
