Live from the Lawn - Winter Blues
First Friday, March 6, 2009, 5-9 p.m.
Hawai‘i State Art Museum; Free

Join us for Celebrate Asia!, a special Live from the Lawn event at the Hawai‘i State Art Museum on First Friday on March 6th from 6 to 9 p.m. The event features music and dance from Thailand, Bali, Java, Malaysia, Cambodia, and the Philippines.

The University of Hawai‘i Gamelan Ensemble will perform hypnotic melodies using the instruments of an Indonesian indigenous “orchestra” largely composed of struck metalophones in the shape of gongs and slabs. The group consists of students and community members who share a special appreciation for playing gamelan. Some of the members have been with the group since its beginning in 1970.

The Mahalohalo Kolintang Ensemble will perform music that is rooted in traditions of the Southern Philippines and Malay gong cultures. Mahalohalo is a combination of the Sanskrit “Maha” meaning great, the Filipino “halohalo” meaning mix-mix, and the Hawaiian “mahalo,” in gratitude for ancestors and the blessings of music, dance, life, and the land.

Azti Nezia Suriyanti bt. Azmi and Desiree A. Seguritan will perform Legong Kuntir depicting a battle between the youthful monkey brothersSubali and Sugriwa from an episode of the Ramayana – an epic story that originated in India and is embedded within the cultures of various countries in the region called Southeast Asia. Balinese dance is deeply rooted in the unique spirituality of the Balinese people. Therefore, dancing and playing gamelan music is considered an offering to spirits and deities.

Ruth Pfeiffer and the Silangan Singers will also be performing on the lawn. Their mission is to share and perpetuate Filipino choral music, and their repertoire includes indigenous, folk, and popular songs, which are composed and sung in the various languages of the Philippines. George Garcia and dancers from Isla Tango, who are also martial artists, will juxtapose the drama of the tango and the control of kung fu.

Upstairs on the second floor Lanai Lounge, there will be music by DJ Tony, who will play 1960s pop music from Thailand, and DJ Mr. Nick, who will play sounds from the Asian underground. Rose Sutabutra and Mattana Pongmai wil perform both classical and folk dances from Thailand on the Lawn and the second floor lanai. This free event is presented by the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and the Friends of the Hawai‘i State Art Museum. The program is produced by Tim Bostock Productions.

Delicious food will be on sale on the lawn from Le Crepe Café, Soul de Cuba Café, and Hank’s Haute Dogs. Downtown @ the HiSAM, the museum restaurant on the first floor, will be open for dinner and will be serving Spanish tapas. You can also visit our museum gift shop, Shop@HiSAM, which features locally-made handcrafted gifts.
