Womens History Month
In celebration of Womens History Month, Pacific Traditions Gallery will feature Water Color paintings by Laila, Photography prints from Cindy Fancannon, Macramé Silk Cord Jewelry by Lynn and Glass Art by Paulyne Leong.
Every year, during the month of March, hundreds of thousands of events are held throughout the country to acknowledge and recognize the amazing accomplishments of women.
This national celebration and recognition of womens historic achievements began in 1980 when Presidential Proclamation proclaimed National Womens History Week. In 1987, Congressional Resolution to an entire month expanded this national celebration by declaring March as National Womens History Month.
In the early nineteenth century, women were considered second-class citizens whose existence was limited to the interior life of the home and care of the children. Women were considered sub-sets of their husbands, and after marriage they did not have the right to own property, maintain their wages, or sign a contract, much less vote. It was expected that women be obedient wives, never to hold a thought or opinion independent of their husbands. It was considered improper for women to travel alone or to speak in public.
Since antiquity, women artists have been creating alongside their male counterparts. Many of these women were highly successful during their lifetimes, yet have been omitted from art historical documentation.
Before 1986, all editions of H.W. Jansonís History of Art (the standard text used in introductory college art history classes), included 3,000 male and no female artists.
