As usual there will be the new and the old with us in the historic Mendonca Building's Courtyard for the February One Night Stand.

For the “new”, we have Paul Forney who was born & raised in Hawaii and has been drawing and painting since he can remember. He was the kid in school that was always in trouble for "doodling" instead of listening. For a time on the mainland, his canvases were water tanks and storage towers. The whole time he was away, he wanted to come back to Hawaiian roots and focus on his love of the islands and the ocean through his artwork. You can also see his “surf art” on his van and on the fence at the Zoo.

Henry Ha’o is also a first timer at the Courtyard but well known in Honolulu art circles. He was recognized in 1969 as the youngest artist to be awarded a commission by the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts at age 16. An accomplished watercolorist and oil painter, he now translates the local scenery and tradition of hula through acrylic paint on canvas. His bold brushwork and subtle injections of color bring to life the beauty of the sea, the mystery of the mountains and the grace of the hula. He paints in traditional as well as contemporary style. He also can be found at “Art on the Zoo Fence” on Saturdays.

Back again, Jules Schaper has been busier than ever working on the deluge of commissions that came from her first Chinatown show in November and feverishly painting them according to her daily inspirations. Her paintings are primarily of a Hawaiian theme and give the appearance of batik on rice paper. Additional work of hers can be seen on Printscapes.com.

Shayne Turner, in her second Courtyard experience, will again be showing her “Grand Strands”. Crafted individually by hand in beautiful Temple Valley, each unique piece is an artistic expression as well as a piece of jewelry. Some are whimsical and others elegant. Each celebrates many of nature’s own creations, reflecting the places and colors of our Islands.

Original art work is displayed and Box Dinners are provided for sale by Kate Wagner in her Starpoint Café.

Otis Schaper and Friends will return as the musicians of the evening. Otis has written several new songs to be featured at the February First Friday. He is a member of the Oahu Songwriters Group and often can be found on stage at The Higher Ground in Wahiawa. Schaper also plays guitar and provides lead vocals for local rock band: The Strangers. He'll also be included at the Bonzer Front celebration of film art and music in Haleiwa in mid-February.

Enter into the Chinatown Courtyard on Smith Street through the Blue Dragon Gate. Watch for the Bamboo hanging over the fence. This event is free and open to the public.
