Each monthly event in the hidden courtyard of the Mendonca Building combines exciting artistic works, Hawaiian and contemporary music and refreshments with a festive atmosphere. February's "One Night Stand" on Smith Street will feature several unique artists new to the Courtyard.

The most unique is Walter Liew, an irrepressible man who loves to care for and train trees as well as to teach and share his knowledge. He will be sharing his stunning bonzai trees with the Courtyard visitors. He is developing an exciting new style of penjing which implies a lot of movement (like a dragon) and utilizes extensive wiring. Walter's collection has been developed over many years and he is one of the very few trainers who has the personal pride and courage to develop his own style.

Lisa Madsen cites her love of Hawaii and the surrounding ocean as her inspiration for the new paintings she will be showing on First Friday. She is inspired especially by the fish that live on Hawaii's spectacular reefs

And Christina Simpkins, a local actress, photographer and now executive producer of a new, soon to be released feature film shot in Hawaii: "All for Melissa". She has recently had three short films chosen for the last Louis Vuitton Hawaii International Film Festival. She will be showing several of her photos that celebrate the sensuality and strength of women by the use of body landscapes.

Luke Thompson has been showing his large landscapes inside Starpoint Café in the Courtyard for the past few months and will overflow onto the walls outside the Café in February.

Our musical artistry will be provided by Fred Gayagas in February. He interacts enthusiastically with the crowd as he performs his Hawaiian music and old favorites.

Enter the Courtyard through the gate on Smith Street as marked by the Blue Dragon and his lanterns.
