AT HAWAI‘I STATE ART MUSEUM ON FRIDAY, JANUARY 5TH, 2007


HONOLULU – Local fans will get a sneak preview of the Grammy Awards line-up for Best Hawaiian Music Album. Nominated musicians from Hawai‘i will come together to showcase their talents at a free Grammy Awards Concert on the front lawn of the Hawai‘i State Art Museum at 250 Hotel Street on Friday, January 5th from 5 to 9 p.m.

This second annual concert features artists from the nominated albums: Grandmaster Slack Key Guitar – Ledward Ka‘apana; Hawaiian Slack Key Kings – Makana, Milton Lau, Kevin and Ikaika Brown, and Paul Togioka; Legends of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar - Live from Maui – Daniel Ho, George Kahumoku, Richard and Ululani Ho‘opih‘i, Peter de Aquino, and Paul Konweiser; and Generation Hawai‘i – Amy Hanaiali‘i, Sonny Lim, and Mark Johnson.


Join us under the stars for this outdoor event saluting the achievements of Hawai‘i’s music industry and honoring the Grammy Awards nominees for Best Hawaiian Music Album. At the event, music fans will have the opportunity to hear some of Hawai‘i’s most celebrated musicians and recording artists. Guests may bring lawn chairs, beach mats, and picnic food, but please do not bring alcoholic beverages. Compadres and Dixie Grill will have food and drinks for sale.

This free concert is presented by the Friends of the Hawai‘i State Arts Museum, Hawaiian Airlines, Oceanic Time Warner Cable, and Outrigger Waikiki and is co-hosted by the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, the LEF Foundation, and the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism.




CURRENT EXHIBITIONS
Precious Resources: The Land & The Sea, is a new temporary exhibition that runs thru July 7, 2007. The exhibition explores our connection to earth and water and the impact of our natural surroundings on the identity, daily lives, and cultures of Hawai'i. Artists include Allyn Bromley, Robert Hamada, Kathleen Kam, Herb Kane, Wayne Levin, Hiroki Morinoue, Louis Pohl, Franco Salmoiraghi, and John Wisnosky.


Enriched by Diversity: The Art of Hawai'i, is a semi-permanent exhibition featuring two- and three-dimensional works by over 250 Hawai'i-based artists from the Art in Public Places Collection. Inspirational themes in the installation revolve around rediscovering Hawaiian heritage, Asian roots, social consciousness, and cultural traditions.



Live from the Lawn is a series of innovative arts-oriented entertainment programming held on the first Friday of each month, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The shows are free to the public. The events are presented by the Friends of the Hawai'i State Art Museum, supported by the Hawai'i State Foundation for Culture and the Arts, the LEF Foundation, and the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism. Starbucks Coffee and the Honolulu Advertiser are support sponsors at all events. Tim Bostock Productions is the producer of these programs.

Bring a blanket or a low back chair and relax for First Friday at the Hawai'i State Art Museum. It's a beautiful building and a wonderful lawn -- and it's your museum -- so join us as we celebrate the arts. The Hawai'i State Art Museum galleries are open, and free, all evening. This is also a wonderful opportunity for you to see the Art in Public Places and Enriched by Diversity exhibitions, showcasing excellence in Hawai'i's arts.


The Hawai'i State Art Museum is located in the former Armed Forces YMCA at 250 South Hotel Street. The gracious 1928 Spanish mission style building is situated in the historic Hawai'i Capital Cultural District, across from 'Iolani Palace and the State Capitol.
