Precious Resources

First Fridays at the Hawai'i State Art Museum will continue on Friday, October 1st with another free Live from the Lawn arts program entitled "Precious Resources" featuring some great entertainment (see below).

Live from the Lanai celebrates "Precious Resources"

Special Celtic and American roots night to celebrate the traditional harvest season, featuring the Doolin Rakes, Squirrel Hunters and Friends of the Bride, with performances earlier in the evening from "Talkin Trash" -- a family recycling show - and Co-Lab -- an experimental dance collective, both responding to the new exhibit at HiSAM "Precious Resources"

Performance Schedule:
  • 5:00pm Talkin Trash (35min)
  • 5:35 Welcome to the reception from Ron Yamakawa, David de la Torre, Gae Bergquist Trommald, DLNR, Sierra Club... (20mins on stage)
  • 5:55 Co-Lab (5min on stage, then 10mins in galleries)
  • 6:00pm Friends of the Bride (50min)
  • 6:50pm CoLab (5min on stage, then 10mins in galleries)
  • 7:00pm Squirrel Hunters (45min)
  • 7:45pm Doolin Rakes (75min)

Doolin Rakes plays "a rollicking whirligig of a set" says Hana Hou magazine, while the Honolulu Weekly described them as "Honolulu's own Celtic super band". James McCarthy on guitar and vocals, Lesley Kline on fiddle and vocals, Jamie Winpenny on Guitar and vocals and Geoff Red on bass, with Shawn on drums!

The Squirrel Hunters are Lesley Kline, Paul Sato, Doug Toews, and Kilin Reece. They bring a unique mix of traditional & contemporary bluegrass and acoustic music to their delighted Hawai`i audiences, and this is their return to HiSAM after playing in April earlier this year.

Friends of the Bride is Honolulu's one and only jug band, featuring guitarist Charley Myers, along with Julia Wescott Myers (clarinet), Derek Ferrar (ukulele, spoons, kazoo, etc.) and Yash Wichman-Walzak (washtub bass), making up the carefree combo. An admittedly lighthearted group, Friends of the Bride enjoys a good laugh as much as its audience and will often goof and spoof throughout their performances. With a kazoo as your lead instrument, how seriously can a band take itself?

James McCarthy, storyteller and musician, will MC.

+ Compadres will serve food and drink throughout the evening....

Live from the Lawn is a series of innovative arts-oriented entertainment programming held on the first Friday of each month, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The shows are free to the public. The events are presented by the Friends of the Hawai'i State Art Museum, supported by the Hawai'i State Foundation for Culture and the Arts, the LEF Foundation, and the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism. Starbucks Coffee and the Honolulu Advertiser are support sponsors at all events. Tim Bostock Productions is the producer of these programs.
