The Justice and Reconciliation Center January 2008 Events The Peace Center At The Justice and Reconciliation Center 19 N. Pauahi Street Honolulu's Chinatown 96817 808-741-4612 The Month of January is dedicated to Queen Liliuokalani and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. They were people of peace whose lives were notably lacking in peace. She a deposed Queen - he an embattled young minister. The Queen that would not shed one drop of her people's blood to save a nation and the young minister, whose philosophy of non-violence won him a Nobel peace prize. Their time and place on this earth did not overlap, but their scars came from the same source. They were prisoners. Their prisons were not the same, his the cold wet cells of Southern jails. Hers the stark emptiness of an upstairs room closed off from the outside world, in the palace. Stripped of their dignity, stripped of their "somebodydness". Managing to retain their spiritual being while imprisoned they inspired nations, gave hope to their people, wrote, beautiful songs, long letters, thought long thoughts and prayed long prayers. The product of these imprisonments has brought us here. HOLIDAY HONOLULU: JANUARY 2, 2008 -- The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.ÊCoalition-Hawai`i reminds the community that time grows short should you want your organization represented as a group in the Monday, January 21, 2008, parade or to be a vendor at the post-paradeÊcelebration in Kapiolani Park. The parade application is online atÊ Celebrating our 20th year since Hawai`i legally established theÊholiday, our MLK Day parade is truly "the people's parade." We have no staff, only a small group of volunteers working with little budget, and so our success is due to the combined volunteer supportÊof our local community and its rainbow of organizations. OFFICIAL SCHEDULE OF 2008 CELEBRATION EVENTS Tuesday, January 15, 2008; 7:00 pm -- Experience the Royal Hawaiian Band in concert at Kahala Mall performing a birthday tribute to Dr.ÊMartin Luther King, Jr. The 45-minute concert will feature the brilliant music of William Grant Still, Duke Ellington, StevieÊWonder, and selected music from America's Civil Rights Movement. TheÊ Royal Hawaiian Band, under the direction of acclaimed BandmasterÊMichael Nakasone was founded in 1836 by order of King Kamehemeha IIIÊand is one of the last living links to Hawaii's monarchy. The Band is an agency of the City & County of Honolulu and is the only full-time municipal band in the United States. This concert is co-sponsored by the Honolulu Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha PsiÊFraternity Incorporated Friday, January 18, 2008 NOON at Iolani Palace Ð Royal Hawaiian Band Concert dedicated to Queen Liliuokalani and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Saturday, January 19, 2008; 6:30 pm -- One performance of Black Boy, the acclaimed adaptation of Richard Wright's landmark 1945 autobiography This poignant coming-of-age story traces the many boyhood strugglesÊof one of the most important African-American writers of the 20thÊcentury. Holt is a veteran of the New York production of "The Lion King" and "Law & Order." This performance will be in the UH Manoa Campus Center Ballroom and there is no charge (except a $3 fee ifÊ parking on campus). The one man show is appropriate for a generalÊaudience and is presented by the UH Manoa Office of MulticulturalÊStudent Services. For more information, contact 956-7348. Sunday, January 20; 5:30 ÊPM FREE special Martin Luther King Day Screening of "From Shtetl to Swing" Sunday, January 20th, 2008; 7:00 pm -- The Annual Candlelight Nagasaki Peace Bell Ringing Ceremony on the Civic Center grounds ofÊHonolulu Hale; Lauhala and Beretania Streets. Monday, January 21, 2008; 9:00 am -- THE 20th ANNUAL PARADE willÊ begin to move down Kalakaua Avenue with a post-parade Unity Rally atÊ Kapiolani Park (approximately 10 am) with food, entertainment,Ê community booths, and other vendors. Our parade begins at MagicÊ Island with the formation of organizations @ 7:30 a.m. The paradeÊ travels thru Waikiki to Kapiolani Park and the Unity Celebration,Ê with its food, community booths and camaraderie.
