Hawaii State Foundation On Culture and The Arts JANUARY - MARCH 2018 Event Calendar

First Friday: a free, family-friendly evening of art and music. 6:00 - 9:00 p.m., first Friday of each month. Take the elevator or stairs to the second floor.

Second Saturday: free art activities for all ages. 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., second Saturday of each month. Drop in at any time, allowing at least 30 minutes to finish a project to take home. Ground floor Multipurpose Room.

The cafe and shop are independently operated under lease agreements between the Friends of the Hawai‘i State Art Museum, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, and the State of Hawai‘i Department of Accounting and General Services.

ACCESSION

A selection of recent additions to the Art in Public Places Collection of the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts from across the state of Hawai`i.

EMPHASIZED: eye on scale

Exploring the various ways that artists play with scale, and how this in turn affects the viewer's responses and understanding.

HAWAI`I: Change & Continuity

This exhibit tells a story of the past, examining the overlapping influences of nature's bounty and human impact on a fragile environment. As you walk through the exhibit, you will see art that reflects on the forces of nature and man's intrusion. Relevant quotes are placed on walls to help the viewer understand the meaning.

Process Under Pressure

Showcasing a selection of prints from the Art in Public Places Collection, this exhibit focuses on basic printmaking techniques while highlighting the diversity and complexity found within the medium.

Friday, February 16, 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Through April 13, 2018. Selected works will be removed for the National Exhibit (last day to view all works in Regional Exhibit: March 20, 2018).

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is the nation's largest, longest-running, most prestigious visual and literary arts program recognizing accomplishments of students in grades 7 -- 12. It is a symbol of excellence that can bolster resumes, college applications and scholarship applications. All National Award recipients earn a place on the National Recipient list. Selected works will be featured in the National Catalog and The Best Teen Writing anthology. Works receiving Gold Key awards move on to the national level judging. The Hawai`i Regional Scholastic Student Art Awards and Exhibit are presented by the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, Hawai‘i State Department of Education, Hawai‘i Art Education Association, Hawai‘i Association of Independent Schools, and the Friends of the Hawai‘i State Art Museum.

OUR MISSION
To promote, perpetuate, preserve and encourage culture and the arts, history and the humanities as central to the quality of life of the people of Hawai`i. HOURS:
The musuem is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Closed State and Federal Holdays. Always free admission. For pre-recorded information call 586-0900.
