  • First Thursdays Poetry Slam at Hawaiian Brian's Thursday 3/2/2017

Join us this Thursday (March 2nd) for a mind-expanding installment of First Thursdays at Hawaiian Brian's!! As always, this HawaiiSlam show will be hosted by Kealoha and will feature:

-- Barry Flanagan, an American singer-songwriter, musician, and founder of the acclaimed world music group Hapa. Flanagan is known for his guitar and song writing skills, vocal performances, and ocean awareness projects. His band, Hapa, has been described by Rolling Stone as "titans of the genre," and Billboard Magazine recognized them as "Hawai`i's hottest group!" Throughout the years, Hapa has won 12 Na Hoku Hanohano awards, and its first album still remains the number one selling recording by a group or duo in the history of recorded Hawaiian music.

-- The last official qualifier for the 2016-2017 HawaiiSlam season (a.k.a. the "Last Chance" Slam). The top two poets will secure the last spots for the 2017 Grand Slam Finals on April 6th to determine HawaiiSlam's 14 National Poetry Slam team. Winner of this qualifier slam also receives $100.

-- Turntable Sorcery by DJ Monkey (Secret Record Store / Scratch)

-- Live painting by the resident artists (past artists include Smolomon Enos, Aaron "Angry Woebots" Martin, Erin McCullough, Kimi Werner, The Storekeeper, Dhyana Zagri, Stanstill, Nabahe, Wes Ka'uhane, Neal Uno, Pancho Abalos, Mike Fresh, Manny P, Patti Bruce, Aaron Char, Mark Agnir, Jeff Lum, Samantha Goldman, Earl Washington, Clinton "Clean" Haness, Sequoia, Carol Tagawa, TJ Howe, Nikila Badua, Jeremiah Skurtu, Sarah Hodges, Hanam Mun, Risa Oram, Melissa Soriano, and Talulah)

Coming Next Month: the GRAND SLAM FINALS at Hawaiian Brian's (April 6th... HawaiiSlam's 14th Anniversary)!! The 12 best poets from the 2016-2017 First Thursdays season will square off in a three-round elimination match to determine the 2017 HawaiiSlam Team!! Pre-sale tickets will be available at this Thursday's (March 2nd) show for $12. After this Thursday, tickets will be available at various stores and on our website for $15... so get yours early for you AND your friends!! This will definitely be THE slam poetry event of the year (proceeds from this fundraiser go towards sending the team off to Denver, Colorado for the 2017 National Poetry Slam).

Validated parking for Hawaiian Brian's is $2 up to 3 hours, $4 up to 4 hours, and $6 up to 5 hours. There is plenty of street parking in the area as well (note, if you street park or walk/bike/bus, enter through the 24 Hour Fitness lobby on Kapi`olani and walk up the stairs).
