Thank you and welcome to the Future of Marks

15 years ago Chinatown was one on the worst neighborhoods in the Pacific. After 2,500 arts events at The ARTS at Marks Garage things have turned around considerably, and Chinatown is now one of Hawaii's favorite hot spots.

You have helped create a place for us to gather, to celebrate, and belong. We are an urban core blossoming with creativity. We are a destination for those who live here, those seeking an alternative to Waikiki, and soon, those seeking an alternative travel experience.

Raise the Roof was the best inaugural fundraiser on the worst night of the year, but many of you danced in the rain and under the stars for the power of the ARTS.

There are challenges ahead. Kakaako is popular, and funding for the arts is slim. Without your support we would not have made it this far. This year we are grateful for a few new heroes as well. G70 did our initial build-out in 2001 as Group 70 International and has generously volunteered to design a radical renovation for 2017. We are thankful to be funded by a State Grant-In-Aid, partnering with Re-Use Hawaii, and teaming up with the same artisanal contractors who have hammered together the best new places in town.

We will be adding a bookshop by Friends of the Library (who have half-a-million books), and an alternative travel desk by Travel2Change for experiential, philanthropic travelers. Our performance space will expand considerably becoming a hub for live music. In short, we are adding beauty, occupancy, and variety to benefit People, Place and Profits.

Before we close for construction in February, we'll host Oahu Fringe Festival and artists-in-residence from the science ship Falkor. We'll reopen just in time for the international superstars of the Honolulu Biennial; look for it this March First Friday.

A place that honors collaboration, creativity and freedom of expression is more valuable than ever. Please consider making a donation to offset our operating and programming costs during this period of radical transformation. Your donation is tax-deductible. Mele Kalikimaka, Happy New Year and thank you from the next generation of The ARTS at Marks Garage.
