The Pegge Hopper Gallery and Halele'a Gallery are pleased to present Surround, an exhibition on identity and location by artist Jamie R. Allen.

In Surround, Allen illustrates a merging of location and the self in eighteen original pieces. She utilizes watercolor, acrylic, graphite, oil crayons, and silk-screening on paper to build her surrounding environment. Each painting is an acknowledgment of the numerous impressions that can be taken from a single space, or by a single person passing through multiple spaces. Allen brings clarity to these competing narratives as she translates them into art.

A Rhode Island School of Design graduate with a Master's of Fine Art from Montclair State University, Allen moved to Hawaii to intern with the Contemporary Art Museum of Honolulu. The Islands gave Allen a sense of place, a solid foundation to discover and grow. She soon after accepted a position at Hawaii Pacific University as a professor of art. Currently a fulltime artist with a studio in Honolulu, her work is exhibited at the Halele'a Gallery on Kauai and she has attended artist residencies in Vermont and New Mexico. Living in these locations along with her move to Hawaii has allowed Allen to further investigate how location influences her artistic process.

A portion of the proceeds from Surround will benefit Kahumana Farms, a farming community and charity that advocates for the homeless and mentally ill, located in Wai'anae, Hawaii.

Surround is presented in partnership with the Halele'a Gallery, Jamie Allen's creative patron and commercial representative for more than five years. For information about Allen's work, please contact Chad Ulmer at 808-635-8377 or chad@haleleagallery.com

The exhibition runs from October 22 through November 26, 2016, with an opening reception on Saturday, October 22 from 6-8 p.m. The Pegge Hopper Gallery is located in Honolulu's Historic Chinatown. Gallery hours are Tuesday -- Friday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m, Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free.
