  • First Thursdays Poetry Slam at Hawaiian Brian's - Thursday 5/5/2016

May 5th @ Hawaiian Brian's: Featuring Mike Mcgee (International Champion & HBO Def Poet) and a "No Rules" Slam this Thursday!!

Join us this Thursday (May 5th) for a mind-blowing installment of First Thursdays at Hawaiian Brian's!! As always, this HawaiiSlam show will be hosted by Kealoha and will feature:

-- "Mighty" Mike Mcgee, a National Poetry Slam Champion, Individual World Poetry Slam Champion, and HBO Def Poet!! He has performed in thousands of venues all over North America, and was one of the first Americans ever to perform poetry at the University la Sorbonne in Paris, France. His feature performance on HBO's Def Poetry Jam was one of the highest ranked in popularity for 2005, and his humor has made him a household name in the poetry slam community. Even more amazing, Mike was born with the birth defect Spina Bifida (www.sbaa.org), and is very lucky to be walking, talking, thinking and breathing.

-- A "No Rules" Slam. Team pieces, musical accompaniment, cover poems, props, etc are ALLOWED (poets/performers please see note at the bottom of this email). We will be running "No Rules" slams all throughout the summer, so get ready to witness all kinds of creative pieces!!

-- Turntable Sorcery by DJ Mr. Nick (KTUH/HPR)

-- Live painting by the resident artists (past artists include Solomon Enos, Aaron "Angry Woebots" Martin, Erin McCullough, Kimi Werner, The Storekeeper, Dhyana Zagri, Stanstill, Nabahe, Wes

Also this month: Shane Koyczan (International Slam Champion and Olympic Poet) is touring O`ahu's Hawai`i Theatre (May 11th), Hawai`i Island's Kahilu Theatre (May 12th), and Maui's Iao Theatre (May 14th). Validated parking for Hawaiian Brian's is $2 if you stay for less than 4 hours, and $5 flat if you stay longer. There is plenty of street parking in the area as well (note, if you street park or walk/bike/bus, enter through the 24 Hour Fitness lobby on Kapi`olani and walk up the stairs).
