The 1984 film, Purple Rain, will be presented at The ARTS at Marks Garage for one screening only. The Board and Staff of The ARTS at Marks invite the community to come to Chinatown for the monthly First Friday festivities in Chinatown, and stay for the screening at 10:00 PM.

"Our Board of Directors recommended we show this as a tribute to Prince, of course, but also as a testament to the power of the arts" says ARTS Executive Director, Rich Richardson. "We just received permission to screen the film today!"

Set against the subculture of the thriving Minneapolis music scene, Purple Rain is a film about a young musician tormented by an abusive situation at home, but struggling to rise above it through his music career -- much of which is born of his torment. He contends with his bullying father, a rival singer, a burgeoning romance and his own dissatisfied band as he begins to experience stardom.

The soundtrack of the movie contains iconic songs from the 1980s including: "Let's Go Crazy," "Purple Rain," "When Doves Cry," "I Would Die 4 U," "Baby I'm a Star," "Jungle Love," "and The Bird."

According to Rolling Stone magazine, the film "turned Prince into a movie star."

Tickets can be purchased only at the bar at The ARTS at Marks Garage, which will open at 5:00 PM on Friday, May 6. There are now advance sales or reservations and tickets will be sold on a first come, first served basis.

The theatre curtains will open for general seating at 9:30 PM, and the film will begin at 10:00 PM.

The ARTS at Marks Garage is supported in part by Kumu Kahua Theatre - presenting world-class theatre by and about Hawai‘i's people in the heart of downtown Honolulu, Spire Hawai‘i, Kaiser Permanente, Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and Arts, Colliers International, Hawai‘i Community Foundation, O‘io Fund, Kona Brewing Company and 1001 Friends.
