  • First Thursdays Poetry Slam at Hawaiian Brian's - Thursday 3/3/2016

March 3rd @ Hawaiian Brian's: Featuring Ismael Wonder (West African Singer/Songwriter), Taimane (`Ukulele Virtuoso), and the Last Chance Slam this Thursday!!

Join us this Thursday (March 3rd) for a jam-packed installment of First Thursdays at Hawaiian Brian's!! As always, this HawaiiSlam show will be hosted by Kealoha and will feature:

-- Ismael Wonder, a charismatic African singer-songwriter with a penetrating voice and musical talents that span the guitar, flute, harmonica and n'goni. His original compositions, sung in Bambara, Peuhl, Arabic, and French, draws from the Mandingo traditions of his native western Africa, as well as Oriental, Reggae, folk and Afrobeat music. Wonder's music takes audiences on a deeply spiritual journey through the rich and diverse confluences of Africa and Europe. His style is unique, but if one had to site sources of inspiration, they would be Ali Farka Touré (mandingo blues), Tinariwen (Touareg) and Fela Kuti (Afrobeat). When asked what style of music he plays, he answers "N'ka foli," which means in Bambara "it's my way of playing."

-- Taimane, an `ukulele virtuoso who has toured around the world, including concerts in France, Turkey, Hong Kong, Canada, and Samoa. She is a Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award Nominee and has opened for Earth Wind and Fire, Chicago, Jimmy Buffett, Chris Isaak, and many more. She will headline Hawai`i Theatre for the first time on March 25th with a new show: "A Musical and Theatrical Odyssey, The Elements"

-- The last official qualifier for the 2015-2016 HawaiiSlam season (a.k.a. the "Last Chance" Slam). The top two poets will secure the last spots for the 2016 Grand Slam Finals on April 7th at Hawaiian Brian's. Winner of this qualifier slam also receives $100.

-- Turntable Sorcery by DJ Toki (Sisters In Sound)

-- Live painting by the resident artists (past artists include Solomon Enos, Aaron "Angry Woebots" Martin, Erin McCullough, Kimi Werner, The Storekeeper, Dhyana Zagri, Stanstill, Nabahe, Wes Ka'uhane, Neal Uno, Pancho Abalos, Mike Fresh, Manny P, Patti Bruce, Aaron Char, Mark Agnir, Jeff Lum, Samantha Goldman, Earl Washington, Clinton "Clean" Haness, Sequoia, Carol Tagawa, TJ Howe, Nikila Badua, Jeremiah Skurtu, Sarah Hodges, Hanam Mun, Risa Oram, and Melissa Soriano)
