Intersections Visiting Artist and Scholar Program announces

LISA REIHANA

Lisa Reihana will be in residence from October 1 -- 13, 2014 at the Department of Art & Art History, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (UHM) through the Intersections Visiting Artist and Scholar Program. Her work comments on gender politics, cultural agency and museological interventions. Reihana's video work Te Po O Matariki will be presented in the exhibition Binding & Looping: Transfer of Presence in Contemporary Pacific Art, on view at the University of Hawai‘i Art Gallery from October 5 -- December 5, 2014.

Lisa Reihana, Intersections Visiting Artist

LISA REIHANA Bio

Lisa Reihana, from Aotearoa New Zealand, is of Nga Puhi: Ngati Hine and Ngai Tu descent. Her practice is wide-ranging and includes installation, moving image and time-based media, sculpture, photography, performance, costume, body adornment and text-based works. Her work comments on gender politics, cultural agency and museological interventions. Reihana completed a major commission Mai i te aroha, ko te aroha for Te Papa Tongarewa, Wellington in 2008. A development of this work is included in Te Po O Matariki (2010) where Whirimako Black performs a karanga, the first sound heard on the marae in formal occasions and the call-and-response by senior Maori women as part of Maori welcoming ceremonies known as powhiri.

Born in 1964, Lisa Reihana was raised in in Blockhouse Bay in Auckland, New Zealand. She attended the Elam School of Fine Arts at Auckland University with an initial focus on sculpture. However, she became one of the department's foundation students in the time-based arts and graduated with a BFA degree in 1987.

Intersections is a visiting artist and scholar program that supports and enriches the curriculum of the Department of Art & Art History, the cultural diversity of the University, and Hawaii's art community at-large. Each semester the program brings in recognized and emerging artists and scholars, known internationally, in order to enliven and promote the growth of arts appreciation and awareness on O‘ahu.
