FIRST THURSDAYS: $100 NATIONALLY CERTIFIED SLAM POETRY COMPETITION AND OPEN MIC... An evening of performance poetry, music, and live art hosted by Kealoha. Winner of the night receives $100. Join us this Thursday (February 6th) for a jam-packed installment of First Thursdays at Fresh Cafe!! As always, this HawaiiSlam show will be hosted by Kealoha and will feature:

-- Climbing PoeTree (Alixa & Naima). Their award-winning performances are composed of dual-voice spoken word poetry, hip hop, and multi-media theatre that has been featured on HBO s Def Poetry Jam, BET s The Next, and South Africa s Lovelife. Over the past 10 years, they have blazed stages in more than 70 cities across the U.S., and abroad from the UK to South Africa, Mexico to Cuba. They have performed alongside visionary leaders and artists such as Cornel West, Erykah Badu, Alicia Keys, Angela Davis, Alice Walker, Saul Williams, Amiri Baraka, Sonia Sanchez, Danny Glover, The Last Poets, and Dead Prez. They are on a Hawai i tour (including a full-length show on Feb 8th at Tenney Theater), and more information can be found at www.ClimbingPoeTree.com
-- Leah Song and Biko Casini from Rising Appalachia. They are powerful songwriters and musicians steeped in the traditions of Southern Soul and international roots music. Having toured over 14,000 miles across the United States, they have been featured at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, National Public Radio All Songs Considered, and the New Orleans Fringe Festival. They are touring alongside Climbing PoeTree throughout Hawai i
-- Guest appearance by Murray Kyle (Australian roots music)
-- An official qualifier for the 2013-2014 HawaiiSlam season. Normal slam rules apply, and the top two poets will advance to the 2014 Grand Slam Finals (on April 3rd, 2014) that will determine HawaiiSlam s 11th National Poetry Slam team.
-- Music by Jerome James (Electrojazz)
-- Live painting by the resident artists (past artists include Solomon Enos, Erin McCullough, Kimi Werner, The Storekeeper, Dhyana Zagri, Stanstill, Nabahe, Wes Ka`uhane, Neal Uno, Pancho Abalos, Mike Fresh, Manny P, Patti Bruce, Aaron Char, Mark Agnir, Jeff Lum, Samantha Goldman, Earl Washington, Clinton "Clean" Haness, Sequoia, Carol Tagawa, TJ Howe, Nikila Badua, Jeremiah Skurtu, Sarah Hodges, Hanam Mun, Risa Oram, and Melissa Soriano)

PRESS RELEASE:

The 11th official HawaiiSlam season rolls on with its monthly qualifiers at First Thursdays (February 6th, 2014). The top two poets will qualify for the HawaiiSlam Finals in April 2014 that will determine the team to represent Hawai`i at the 2014 National Poetry Slam in the San Francisco Bay Area, California. As always, the night will be hosted by Kealoha, and will feature live painters and a guest DJ who will provide turntable sorcery throughout the evening.
