Goodwill Industries of Hawaii thanks the community and sponsors for supporting Bank of Hawaii presents Goodwill Goes GLAM!

Goodwill Industries of Hawaii extends a special "thank you" to the community, title sponsor, and many business sponsors for once again supporting their second annual public awareness event - Bank of Hawaii presents Goodwill Goes GLAM!

The goal of this special event week was to highlight Goodwill Industries of Hawaii's community impact and non-profit mission: to help people with employment barriers to reach their full potential and become self-sufficient.

The event week activities began with the Goodwill GALA & VIP Pre-Sale which included a private sponsor dinner, reception and fashion show highlighting local talent on September 19, 2013 and continued with the Goodwill GLAM! Sale! that was open to the public from September 20-22, 2013.

Over 100 people were lined up before the 10 am opening of the Goodwill GLAM! Sale, which included more than 40,000 items on over 20,000 square feet of retail space at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall. The sale demonstrated how Goodwill provides value to shoppers as a resource for name brands, luxury items and unique vintage finds at affordable prices.

The event succeeded in raising over $230,000, attracting nearly 3,000 event-week participants and procuring more than 300 volunteers.

Laura Smith, CEO/President shared: "We are very happy for the community's support of our second annual public awareness event. We are also thankful for our supporters and employees who once again helped make this event come to life. Proceeds generated from this event go towards supporting Goodwill's mission of providing job readiness and job placement programs."

About Goodwill
Goodwill Industries of Hawaii, Inc. is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit corporation that helps people with employment barriers to reach their full potential and become self-sufficient.

Since 1959, we have provided job placement, career development, education, training, employment and support services for people throughout the state. Over 10,000 Hawaii residents each year have benefitted from Goodwill's services, and thousands have found employment in our community.

Philosophy
For more than 100 years, Goodwill Industries has championed a philosophy of community service through the power of work. In 1902, the founder of this philosophy, Reverend Edgar J. Helms, a Methodist Minister, took burlap bags into Boston's wealthier neighborhoods collecting donations. He invited community residents with disabilities and other disadvantages to help repair and sell the donations and used the revenue made through the sales to pay the workers. This philosophy is evident throughout Hawaii's Goodwill, and in Goodwills throughout the world.

Goodwill Industries International
Goodwill Industries of Hawaii (GIH) is an autonomous, dues-paying member of Goodwill Industries International, a growing network of Goodwill organizations throughout the world. There are currently 183 full member Goodwill organizations in the United States and Canada. Since the organization's founding in 1902, Goodwill has helped more than 9 million people. Globally, Goodwill Industries International announced its 21st Century Initiative to serve 20 million people by the year 2020.

Goodwill Leadership and Accreditation
Goodwill is led by a volunteer Board of Directors comprised of civic and business leaders from the community. Goodwill has been fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) for more than 30 years, and is certified by NISH. Goodwill maintains active membership in the National Rehabilitation Association, Hawaii Alliance of Nonprofit Organizations, Retail Merchants of Hawaii, Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii, Aloha United Way, Hawaii Employers Council, West Oahu Economic Development Association, and the Kapolei Chamber of Commerce.

Funding and Revenue
Goodwill is rare among not-for-profit agencies because most of its revenue is earned. Our unique, self-sustaining system enables us to serve thousands in Hawaii each year.

Goodwill Industries of Hawaii is funded through:
  • Retail sales at our community stores
  • Service contracts (in competition with private enterprise)
  • City, state and federal job training grants
  • Support from individuals and corporations
