  • First Thursdays Poetry Slam at Fresh Cafe - Thursday 10/3/2013



Join us this Thursday (October 3rd) for a jaw-dropping installment of First Thursdays at Fresh Cafe!! As always, this HawaiiSlam show will be hosted by Kealoha and will feature:

-- Paula Fuga, a Na Hoku Hanohano Award winner (Hawai`i s highest and most prestigious music honor). On her independent record label, Pakipika Productions, Paula has managed to release her unique flavor of music around the world, earning an astounding and dedicated fan base, while collecting impressive critical acclaim. She has collaborated with the Honolulu Symphony, Jack Johnson, and Ziggy Marley. First Thursdays welcomes this 2006 HawaiiSlam Grand Slam Finalist home for a hana hou performance.
-- An official qualifier for the 2013-2014 HawaiiSlam season. Normal slam rules apply, and the top two poets will advance to the 2014 Grand Slam Finals (on April 3rd, 2014) that will determine HawaiiSlam s 11th National Poetry Slam team.
-- Turntable Sorcery by DJ Toki (Sisters in Sound)
-- Live painting by the resident artists (past artists include Solomon Enos, Erin McCullough, Kimi Werner, The Storekeeper, Dhyana Zagri, Stanstill, Nabahe, Wes Ka`uhane, Neal Uno, Pancho Abalos, Mike Fresh, Manny P, Patti Bruce, Aaron Char, Mark Agnir, Jeff Lum, Samantha Goldman, Earl Washington, Clinton "Clean" Haness, Sequoia, Carol Tagawa, TJ Howe, Nikila Badua, Jeremiah Skurtu, Sarah Hodges, Hanam Mun, and Risa Oram)

The 11th official HawaiiSlam season rolls on with its monthly qualifiers at First Thursdays (October 3rd, 2013). The top two poets will qualify for the HawaiiSlam Finals in April 2014 that will
determine the team to represent Hawai`i at the 2014 National Poetry Slam in the San Francisco Bay Area, California.

The special feature for this show is Paula Fuga. On her independent record label, Pakipika Productions, Paula Fuga has managed to release her unique flavor of music around the world, earning an astounding and dedicated fan base, while collecting impressive critical acclaim,
including a Na Hoku Hano Hano Award; Hawaii s highest and most prestigious music honor. She has collaborated with the Honolulu Symphony, Jack Johnson, and Ziggy Marley. As always, the night will be hosted by Kealoha, and will feature live painters and a guest DJ who will provide turntable sorcery throughout the evening.
