The 10th official HawaiiSlam season rolls on with its monthly qualifiers at First Thursdays (January 3rd, 2013). The top two poets will qualify for the HawaiiSlam Finals in April 2013 that will determine the team to represent Hawai`i at the 2013 National Poetry Slam in Boston, Massachusetts.

The special feature for this show is Kane "Novakane" Smego. He is a National Poetry Slam Finalist, Southern Fried Poetry Slam Champion, and a Lake Eden Arts Festival Champion. In the summer of 2011, Kane helped create and lead the Poetic Portraits of a Revolution (PPR2011) project that traveled to Egypt and Tunisia to collect stories of the popular revolutions, and broadcasted them as poems in an eight-week radio series on the National Public Radio affiliate WUNC. He has performed poetry all over the country, featuring at historic venues such as the Nuyorican Poets Caf , the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, and Chicago's Green Mill. As always, the night will be hosted by Kealoha, and will also feature live painters and DJ Mr. Nick who will provide turntable sorcery throughout the evening.

Happy New Year!! Join us this Thursday (January 3rd) for a top-notch installment of First Thursdays at Fresh Cafe!! As always, this HawaiiSlam show will be hosted by Kealoha and will feature:

-- An official qualifier for the 2012-2013 HawaiiSlam season. Normal slam rules apply, and the top two poets will advance to the 2013 Grand Slam Finals (on April 4th, 2013) that will determine HawaiiSlam's 10th National Poetry Slam team.
-- Turntable Sorcery by DJ Mr. Nick (KTUH)
-- Live painting by the resident artists (past artists include Solomon Enos, Erin McCullough, Kimi Werner, The Storekeeper, Dhyana Zagri, Stanstill, Nabahe, Wes Ka`uhane, Neal Uno, Pancho Abalos, Mike Fresh, Manny P, Patti Bruce, Aaron Char, Mark Agnir, Jeff Lum, Samantha Goldman, Earl Washington, Clinton "Clean" Haness, Carol Tagawa, TJ Howe, Nikila Badua, Jeremiah Skurtu, Sarah Hodges, Hanam Mun, and Risa Oram)
