First Thursdays: $100 Nationally Certified Slam Poetry Competition and Open Mic... An evening of performance poetry, music, and live art hosted by Kealoha. Featuring Natasha T. Miller (Women of The World Finalist) and Kim Johnson (Individual World Poetry Slam Finalist). Winner of the night receives $100. LOCATION: Fresh Cafe, 831 Queen Street (@ intersection with Cooke Street), Thursday 3/1/2012, 8:30pm. Admission is $3 before 8:30pm, and $5 after. -- Kim Johnson, a San Francisco poet who has been a member of several slam teams and toured the US many times over, performing at slam venues, clubs, colleges and festivals. In 2009 she finished in the top ten at the Individual World Poetry Slam competition, and in 2010 completed her first European poetry tour with performances in Germany, Austria and The Netherlands.
-- Natasha T. Miller, a Detroit native who has been a Women of The World Poetry Slam top five finalist three out of the last four years, once ranking as high as the third female slam poet in the World. She has starred in a national commercial campaign for Sprite, and has premiered on stages with performers such as Mo'nique, Malcolm Jamal Warner, Jessica Care Moore, Talib Kweli, Charlyne Yi, and many more.
-- The last official qualifier for the 2011-2012 HawaiiSlam season (a.k.a. the "Last Chance" Slam). The top two poets will secure the last spots for the 2012 Grand Slam Finals on April 5th at Fresh Cafe)

Coming Next Month: the GRAND SLAM FINALS at Fresh Cafe (April 5th... HawaiiSlam's 9th Anniversary)!! The 12 best poets from the 2011-2012 First Thursdays season will square off in a three-round elimination match to determine the 2012 HawaiiSlam Team!! Pre-sale tickets will be available at this Thursday's (March 1st) show for $12. After this Thursday, tickets will be available at various stores and on our website for $15... so get yours early for you AND your friends!! This will definitely be THE slam poetry event of the year (proceeds from this fundraiser go towards sending the team off to Charlotte, NC for the 2012 National Poetry Slam).

The 9th official HawaiiSlam season rolls on with its monthly qualifiers at First Thursdays (March 1st, 2012). This slam will be the "last chance slam" for poets to qualify for the HawaiiSlam Finals on April 5th, 2012 that will determine the 9th team to represent Hawai`i at the 2012 National Poetry Slam in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The special features for this show are Natasha T. Miller and Kim Johnson. Natasha T. As always, the night will be hosted by Kealoha, and will feature live painters and a guest DJ who will provide turntable sorcery throughout the evening.

Fresh Cafe is located at 831 Queen Street (@ intersection with Cooke Street). Ample street parking and $4 valet parking will be available. Doors open at 7:30pm, and the show starts at 8:30pm.
