First Thursdays: $100 Nationally Certified Slam Poetry Competition and Open Mic... An evening of performance poetry, music, and live art hosted by Kealoha. Featuring "G" Yamazawa and Kane "Novakane" Smego (National Slam Finalists). Winner of the night receives $100. -- "G" Yamazawa and Kane "Novakane" Smego from Durham, NC. They are 2010 National Poetry Slam Finalists, Southern Fried Champions, and have performed at such historic venues as the Sundance Film Festival, Chicago's Green Mill and the Nuyorican Poets Caf . G finished 5th in the world at the 2010 Individual World Poetry Slam, and Novakane won the 2008 LEAF Slam among some of the nation's top poets. Both are educators and directors of NC's premier youth poetry organization Sacrificial Poets, and Kane recently returned from Egypt and Tunisia as a part of the Poetic Portraits of a Revolution project.
-- An official qualifier for the 2011-2012 HawaiiSlam season. Normal slam rules apply, and the top two poets will advance to the 2012 Grand Slam Finals (on April 5th, 2012) that will determine HawaiiSlam's 9th National Poetry Slam team.

-- Live painting by the resident artists (past artists include Solomon Enos, Erin McCullough, Kimi Werner, The Storekeeper, Dhyana Zagri, Stanstill, Nabahe, Wes Ka`uhane, Neal Uno, Pancho Abalos, Mike Fresh, Manny P, Patti Bruce, Aaron Char, Mark Agnir, Jeff Lum, Samantha Goldman, Earl Washington, Clinton "Clean" Haness, Carol Tagawa, TJ Howe, and Nikila Badua)

The 9th official HawaiiSlam season rolls on with its monthly qualifiers at First Thursdays (November 3rd, 2011). The top two poets will qualify for the HawaiiSlam Finals in April 2012 that will determine the team to represent Hawai`i at the 2012 National Poetry Slam in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The special features for this show are "G" Yamazawa and Kane "Novakane" Smego from Durham, NC. They are 2010 National Poetry Slam Finalists, Southern Fried Champions, and have performed at such historic venues as the Sundance Film Festival, Chicago's Green Mill and the Nuyorican Poets Caf . As always, the night will be hosted by Kealoha, and will feature live painters and a guest DJ who will provide turntable sorcery throughout the evening.

Fresh Cafe is located at 831 Queen Street (@ intersection with Cooke Street). Ample street parking and $4 valet parking will be available. Doors open at 7:30pm, and the show starts at 8:30pm.
