A collection composed of Mod-vibed dresses is the brainchild of photographer and collage artist, turned self-taught fashion designer, Roberta Oaks Power. A Missouri native and country-girl at heart, Oaks' artistic roots are dated to her farmhouse childhood and creative parents.
Oaks explains her work as "...a juxtaposition. I've been a visual artist much longer than a designer, mainly working in mixed media collage and photography. I started making art and got interested in fashion as a kid. I always had a project going on. It's common to see a lot of different elements and materials come together in my designs. Color and boldness are really important to me. My designs in fashion have an urban yet vintage quality to them. I grew up in the country with an outhouse and then moved to London. It all makes sense! Animal prints are huge for me. So is color. Color and print combos are amazingly powerful! You can really move people with color and print. Girls feel a certain way when they put one of my dresses on. They become a certain person when they wear my designs and they like who that is. The ability to transform a person's mood and feeling through a fashion is really cool. Getting a reaction is the ultimate goal of every type of artist and to be able to evoke that response through fashion is what it's all about and it's really, really fun and rewarding. There are dedicated Roberta Oaks fans globally. They are collecting certain styles, asking for more, and giving me amazing feedback. This is how I know I am doing my job as an artist and designer. Roberta Oaks Hawaii was officially born July 15,2004. At the beginning Oaks handcrafted each item and sold at local art fairs, on the beach, or by private appointment. Today the brand is manufactured in Honolulu, Hawaii and can be found at more than 150 boutiques within the Islands, on the Mainland, on-line, and even internationally in Japan, Canada, and the Caribbean.
