First Thursdays: $100 Nationally Certified Slam Poetry Competition and Open Mic... An evening of performance poetry, music, and live art hosted by Kealoha. Featuring Stephen Meads (Bay Area Poet). - Stephen Meads, whose unmatched energy, incredible wit, and acrobatic performances have made him an integral member of the Bay Area's collaborative writing and performing ensembles since 2005. He serves annually as one of three judges for the National Poetry Slam's legendary Nerd Slam, and he has represented San Francisco, Berkeley, Oakland, and Tourettes Without Regrets at the National Poetry Slam. Stephen's writing dances between whimsical humor and honest revelation.
-- The kickoff of the 2011-2012 HawaiiSlam season. Normal slam rules apply, and the top two poets will advance to the 2012 Grand Slam Finals that will determine HawaiiSlam s 9th National Poetry Slam team.
-- Spotlight feature dance piece by the Turfin247 crew from Oakland, California
-- Turntable Sorcery by DJ Toki (Sisters in Sound)
-- Massage by Daisy aka Dalia Maltese LMT.LAc. (for $1 per minute)
-- Live painting by the resident artists (past artists include Solomon Enos, Erin McCullough, Kimi Werner, The Storekeeper, Dhyana Zagri, Stanstill, Nabahe, Wes Ka`uhane, Neal Uno, Pancho Abalos, Mike Fresh, Manny P, Patti Bruce, Aaron Char, Mark Agnir, Jeff Lum, Samantha Goldman, Earl Washington, Clinton "Clean" Haness, Carol Tagawa, TJ Howe, and Nikila Badua)

The official 2011-2012 slam season begins this September!! On September 1st, the HawaiiSlam team will start qualifiers for its 9th National Poetry Slam team. The top two poets from each monthly slam will qualify for the 2012 Grand Slam Finals.

The special feature for this show is Stephen Meads, whose unmatched energy, incredible wit, and acrobatic performances have made him an integral member of the Bay Area's collaborative writing and performing ensembles since 2005. As always, the night will be hosted by Kealoha, and will feature live painters and a guest DJ who will provide turntable sorcery throughout the evening.

Fresh Cafe is located at 831 Queen Street (@ intersection with Cooke Street). Ample street parking and $4 valet parking will be available. Doors open at 7:30pm, and the show starts at 8:30pm.
