The University of Hawaii Art Gallery will be open to the public for special hours on Saturday, April 2, from 10:30-5:00 in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Association for Asian Studies and in recognition of its joint conference with the International Convention of Asia Scholars in Honolulu from March 31 - April 3, 2011. (Regular gallery hours: Monday - Friday 10:30-5:00; Sunday 12:00-5:00. Closed: Saturday & spring break, March 21-25.)

The Reformer's Brush: Modernity and Traditional Media in China will be on view through April 8. This outstanding exhibition commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Xinhai revolution in China and showcases 78 works of Chinese calligraphy and painting from Honolulu collectors Dr. Ernest and Letah Lee and Dr. Chin-tang Lo. Artists and leaders whose works are highlighted include Li Hongzhang, who received King Kalakaua and Queen Emma on their 1881 visit to China, and Liang Qichao, who visited Honolulu in 1899 to raise funds for reform. Works by Chiang Kai-shek, Mei Lanfang, Guo Moruo, and many others are also featured. The announcement is in the attachment. Gallery tours and an educational Chinese film series are scheduled on Sundays. For your comfort during the films, a sweater is recommended. Additional details for Sunday events are listed below. Admission to the exhibition and all events is free. Parking fees may apply.

GALLERY TOURS
Sundays, 2:00-3:00 p.m.

March 20: Led by Lisa Yoshihara, Director, University of Hawaii Art Gallery, and co-curator of the exhibition.

March 27: Led by Kate Lingley, UHM assistant professor of Chinese art history, principal curator of the exhibition, and author of the exhibition catalogue essay.

April 3: A collector's tour led by Dr. Ernest Lee, Honolulu cardiologist, who has studied and collected Chinese painting and calligraphy for over 30 years.
