The official 2010-2011 slam season begins this September!! On September 2nd, the HawaiiSlam team will start qualifiers for its 8th National Poetry Slam team. The top two poets from each monthly slam will qualify for the 2011 Grand Slam Finals.
The special feature for this show is Lee Knight Jr., a National Poetry Slam Individual Finalist who has been performing for the past 12 years. Knight has performed throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. His poetry weaves vivid imagery and rich metaphor with raw description to create moving narratives of personal experience and social-political significance. Through his powerful words and confessional style, Lee transforms wistful moments into lyrical conviction. As always, the night will be hosted by Kealoha, and will feature live painters, massages in the lounge, and a guest DJ who will provide turntable sorcery throughout the evening.
Fresh Cafe is located at 831 Queen Street (@ intersection with Cooke Street). Ample street parking and $4 valet parking will be available. Doors open at 7:30pm, and the show starts at 8:30pm. First Thursdays is the largest registered poetry slam in the world (600+ in attendance)!! HawaiiSlam has official 501(c)(3) non-profit status through Poetry Slam Inc. Please forward to anybody who may be interested...
Poets/performers: you will only need one piece to compete, as we will only be doing one round of performances. The three-minute rule is still in effect. You do not have to break the rules to get up on the mic, but just know that you can (poet selection will be primarily random as usual). There will be 4 microphones, a DJ with his/her equipment, and one 1/4" cord to plug in basic instruments. If you have more sound requirements, bring your own equipment to make it happen. That being said, you have 30 seconds to set up... do not make us wait for you!! You can be in more than one piece if you are helping someone else out with theirs.
