UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII ART GALLERY PLACES
IN AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF MUSEUM
PUBLICATIONS DESIGN COMPETITION
The University of Hawai‘i Art Gallery was
selected as a winner of the American Association
of Museums (AAM) 2010 Museum Publications Design
Competition in the Exhibition
Catalogues category, placing with other
institutions with operating budgets under
$750,000. The University of Hawai‘i Art
Gallery won Honorable Mention for its publication Writing with
Thread: Traditional Textiles of
Southwest Chinese Minorities, designed by Kelli Ann Harada,
Watumull Grant for Museum Studies in the Arts
intern and recent Bachelor of Fine Arts graduate. The
elegant catalogue contains nine scholarly essays
and 345 stunning color images of the rich and
intricate textiles and costumes. The 430-page
catalogue is an outstanding and rare publication that
provides seminal and significant contributions to
the fields of textiles and costume research.
The catalogue accompanied Writing with Thread:
Traditional Textiles of Southwest
Chinese Minorities, an
exhibition of over 500 of the finest and historically significant textiles and
costumes of Southwest China that was held at the
UH Art Gallery from September 21 to November 30, 2008
and subsequently traveled to the Chazen Museum of
Art, Madison, Wisconsin and the Museum
of International Folk Art, Santa Fe, New Mexico.
The collection, on loan from Taiwan-based
collector Huang Ying Feng, focused on a region of
topographic, climatic and human diversity—home to 31
of China's 56 ethnic groups.“We are very
pleased once again to have our national peers recognize a UH Art Gallery
publication for the quality of its design,”
commented UH Art Gallery Director Lisa Yoshihara. “The
award highlights the role excellence in design
plays in communicating our exhibition program. We are
very committed to providing educational
opportunities for our students to work alongside
faculty and staff.”
Previously, the UH Art Gallery’s publication
Excelling the Work of Heaven: Personal Adornment
from China designed by Christopher
Hendricks received an honorable mention in the 2008 AAM
Museum Publications Design Competition in the
Exhibition Catalogues category. The 30th annual
AAM Publications Design Competition drew 655 entries from 260
international institutions. The Writing
with Thread catalogue was among more than 160 books,
catalogues, posters, invitations, press kits and
other materials that were selected as winners bestowed in
15 categories. The only national, juried
competition of its kind, this competition recognizes
and encourages excellence in the graphic design
of museum publications. Its winners are chosen
for their overall design excellence, creativity
and ability to express an institution’s personality, mission
or special features. The panel of judges includes
graphic designers, museum professionals
and publishers. Competing institutions are
divided according to budget: museums with annual
operating budgets under $750,000 and those with
budgets of $750,000 or more.
