Hawai‘i Museums Association Annual
Conference and Meeting to be held May 21
HONOLULU (April 29, 2010) — The
Hawai‘i Museums Association (HMA) presents an inspiring and insightful
program of speakers and tours at its 2010 Conference and Annual Meeting on
Friday, May, 21, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., at Pearl Harbor. Highlighted venues
include the USS Arizona Memorial, Ford Island Conference Center, Battleship
Missouri Memorial, and Pacific Aviation Museum.
“This coming conference and meeting
promises to be pivotal and thought-provoking,” said Peter Van Dyke,
president, HMA Board of Directors and the manager of Amy Greenwell Garden.
“Looking ahead, I see very exciting times and great opportunities for
museum professionals, HMA, and the people of Hawai‘i. I strongly encourage
our community to attend this conference.”
The one-day conference kicks off at the USS
Arizona Memorial where the National Parks Service (NPS) is building a new museum
and visitor center, a $58 million construction project. Renowned park historian
Daniel Martinez will conduct a behind-the-scenes tour of their new project and
highlight the respected NPS approach to visitor services and
interpretation.
At the Ford Island Conference Center, Kippen de
Alba Chu, HMA Board’s vice president and the executive director of
‘Iolani Palace, will discuss the exciting opportunities and challenges
presented by two important conferences for museum professionals that are coming
to Honolulu—the Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC) in
October 2010, and the Western Museums Association (WMA) in September
2011—as well as the prospects of holding the American Association of
Museums (AAM) conference in Honolulu in 2014.
Following lunch and the annual HMA meeting,
Sarah Tenney presents “Tactics and Tools to Insure Fundraising Success for
Hawaii’s Museums and Heritage Organizations.” Vice President of
Development for the Battleship Missouri Memorial, Tenney was instrumental in the
recent $18 million renovation of the vessel. A visit to the Pacific Aviation
Museum and its new facilities followed by a boat tour of Pearl Harbor’s
historical sites and memorials round out the day’s events.
To further expand one’s experiences at
Pearl Harbor, the USS Missouri offers the truly unique opportunity to spend the
night on the famous battleship on May 21. This sleepover allows a glimpse into
the Mighty Mo’s place in history and the way of life for the men who lived
and worked on board. Dinner, an evening tour, early morning activities, and
breakfast are included.
On Saturday, May 22, from 9:00 to 1:30, HMA
presents the post-conference workshop, Preservation Issues in a Bad
Economy—Maintaining Collections with Lower Budgets at Bishop
Museum. Featured speakers are: Lynn Davis, head of Preservation, Hamilton
Library, University of Hawai‘i at Manoa, and Barclay Ogden, director for
Library Preservation, University of California Berkeley. This workshop is part
of HMA’s Institute of Museum and Library Sciences (IMLS) grant-funded
project on collections care issues statewide.
