UH ART GALLERY CATALOGUE WINS PELE
AWARD
The University of Hawai'i Art Gallery
exhibition catalogue Writing with Thread: Traditional Textiles of
Southwest Chinese Minorities wins a Pele Regional ADDY Award for book
design at the 31st annual Pele Awards ceremony held at the Hilton Hawaiian
Village Tapa Ballroom on April 10, 2010. The American Advertising Federation
District 13 presented the awards to recognize the best design and advertising
work created in Hawai'i during the previous year. Local winners will compete in
the national ADDY awards competition in Orlando, Florida, June 12.
With scholarly essays and 345 stunning color
images of the rich and intricate textiles and costumes, the 430-page catalogue
is an outstanding and rare publication that provides seminal and significant
contributions to the fields of textiles and costume research. It presents a
deeper appreciation for the people and the cultures that created them. Kelli
Ann Harada, Watumull Grant for Museum Studies in the Arts intern and recent
University of Hawai'i at Manoa graduate, designed the elegant catalogue. UH Art
Gallery Director Lisa Yoshihara stated, "This recognition clearly demonstrates
the caliber of work our students do. The gallery is committed to giving our
students a quality education and professional opportunities to work with faculty
and staff."
The catalogue accompanied Writing with
Thread: Traditional Textiles of Southwest Chinese Minorities, an
exhibition of over 500 of the finest and historically significant textiles and
costumes from Southwest China that was held at the UH Art Gallery from September
21 to November 30, 2008 and subsequently traveled to the Chazen Museum of Art,
Madison Wisconsin and the Museum of International Folk Art, Santa Fe, New
Mexico. The collection on loan from Taiwan-based collector Huang Ying Feng
focused on a region of topographic, climatic and human diversity, home to 31 of
China's 56 ethnic groups.
