The Artistry of
Maurice B. Hutchinson

" Hutch"

Hutch's passion for art dates back to his childhood. Over the years Hutch has explored working in pencil as well as with pen and ink. His current direction is based on what he calls his "doodles", as well as his desire to create an art style which is unique both visually, and in the way the viewer is drawn into interacting with and interpreting each work in his or her way. Hutch digitizes his pencil drawings and sketches to serve as the bottom layer and foundation to the work he is creating. He then digitally paints and builds successive layers of elements upon it. Rather than concentrate on depicting accurate or 'real' objects, Hutch, through the juxtaposition of colorful, textured puzzle-piece shapes, instead tries to create and evoke a certain feeling or mood in his work (e.g. calm, motion, etc.) enabling the eye to explore and discover a variety of images limited only by the viewer's imagination. Hutch considers the creative process to his work complete after it is printed on fine quality canvas or archival quality art papers.

Whether simple or complex in composition, the arrangement and flow of colorful abstract shapes complimented by the use of texture and shadow, serve to offer the viewer an opportunity to experience a unique art style reflecting the multi-cultural heritage and experiences of the artist.

Hutch's artwork has been displayed at numerous juried and non-juried exhibitions in Hawaii and on the mainland.

About Hutch:

Originally a native of Rochester, New York, Hutch has been living in Hawaii since 2003. Upon graduating from the University of Rochester in 1976 (B.A. Degree in Chinese language and Asian Studies), he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. Hutch retired from the Corps in July 2006 at the rank of Colonel after 30 years of service which included numerous tours of duty and deployments in the Asia-Pacific region (Okinawa, Korea, Republic of the Philippines, Thailand, Hong Kong and the People's Republic of China), and deployment to Saudi Arabia and Kuwait where he participated in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. In addition to completing numerous command and staff assignments during his military career, Hutch also earned a M.A. degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College, served as a Congressional Fellow in the United States Senate working both as a Professional Staff Member for Senator Sam Nunn and on the staff of the Senate Armed Services Committee (providing support on issues in the Asia-Pacific region), and served 3 years at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing as the United States Marine Attaché to the People's Republic of China. His last duty assignment was in Honolulu at the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies where he served as the Chairman of the Regional Studies Department in the College of Security Studies.
