TCM premiers the
Art-o-mat in
Hawai‘i!
What
is the Art-o-mat?
Art-o-mat machines are
retired cigarette vending machines that have been converted to vend art. The
brainchild of North Carolina artist Clark Whittington, there are 82 active
machines in various locations throughout the country including the Whitney
Museum of American Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. TCM will
be the first location in Hawaii to have one.
What do you get from an Art-o-mat?
The experience of pulling the knob alone
is quite a thrill, but you also walk away with an original work of art while
supporting the museum and local artists in a fun way. The shop will have tokens
you can purchase for $5. What an easy way to become an art
collector!
Want to be an Art-o-mat artist?
There are approximately 400 contributing
artists from 10 different countries currently involved in the Art-o-mat project.
We are always searching for fresh work. Artists interested in participating can
check out www.artomat.org
for submission forms and technical information. If you have further questions
about submitting your work, please contact Betsy Robertson at
808-523-3447
