The Contemporary Museum, Honolulu Wins MetLife Foundation Museum
and Community Connections Grant

Grant will support the TCM on the Go! program, which extends the reach of the museum beyond its walls through hands-on activities with multicultural and intergenerational audiences.

HONOLULU, Hawaii, December 8, 2009 – The Contemporary Museum (TCM) has been awarded a MetLife Foundation 2009 Museum and Community Connections grant for $50,000 to support the TCM on the Go! program. Fifteen grants, totaling $1,000,000, were awarded to museums for exhibitions, artist residencies, and other programs that extend their reach into diverse communities and make art a part of people’s lives.

TCM on the Go! is a community outreach and museum project to increase exposure and involvement in contemporary arts for underserved multi-cultural, intergenerational communities in Hawaii. TCM on the Go! Is developed to 1) awaken the vision of the community through exposure to contemporary arts; 2) inspire communities and neighborhoods to expand their horizons at home, in the community, and artistically; 3) enhance the quality of life, self-esteem, and expression; 4) promote understanding and creative expression through the arts, and 5) increase access to the museum as a venue for continued exposure to the arts. Access to hands-on activities, lectures, tours, and tours of the TCM galleries and exhibits, will create opportunities for the underserved communities to learn about new perspectives, communicate with others and cultivate knowledge and relationships that promote local and global citizenry.

“MetLife Foundation has a long history of partnering with museums to support educational opportunities for people of all ages,” said Dennis White, president and CEO of MetLife Foundation. “We are pleased to recognize The Contemporary Museum for its innovative work and commitment to our island communities to provide more opportunities for people to experience and understand our world in new ways.”

“We are honored to be recognized and awarded such a prestigious grant from the MetLife Foundation,” stated Allison Wong, Executive Director of TCM. “The Contemporary Museum will now be able to extend our educational programs and reach out to various communities of Hawaii, who otherwise would not have access to contemporary art.”

The goal of this competitive program is to broaden arts programming and promote museums as centers of education without boundaries. Winners were selected on the basis of their potential to engage diverse populations in the arts, creativity and innovation, and commitment to the community.
