+/- Selected Works with Paper," by Maya Lea Portner

+/- Selected Works with Paper,” by Maya Lea Portner
Art Exhibit at The Contemporary Museum Café Gallery

(Honolulu, Thursday, November 12, 2009, FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE)
The Contemporary Museum (www.tcmhi.org) Café Gallery exhibits, “+/- Selected Works with Paper” by Maya Lea Portner. The exhibition begins November 17 and runs through December 13, 2009. TCM Café Gallery is located at 2411 Makiki Heights Drive in Honolulu, and is open Tuesday – Sunday from 11:30 am – 2:30 pm.

This selection of two-dimensional work includes drawings, paper-cuts, and sewn constructions. Through the use of patterns, Portner investigates the tension between the superficiality of decoration and the meanings of underlying motifs. This push-and-pull within layers of meaning is echoed in the artist’s approach to the paper as both surface to work on and structure to work with. The seemingly "decorative" patterns’ symbolic potentials are revealed through the materiality of the resulting artwork. Pattern implies order; order begets structure, purpose, meaning, reason, idea.

Maya Portner holds a BFA in sculpture from Washington University School of Art, St. Louis and a MFA from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa, where she studied under Pat Hickman. Portner has been included in “Mapped” and “Contemporary Fiber Artists of Hawaii” curated by Inger Tully at The Contemporary Museum at First Hawaiian Center, both in 2008. Portner was also featured as one of 24 international artists in the Holland Paper Biennial 2008, in Rijswijk, Netherlands, and currently has a sculpture on exhibit at the Museum of Natural History La Specola in Florence, Italy, through January 2010. Maya Portner lives -- teaches and makes her art -- in Honolulu.
