FOR THE TIME BEING
A Christmas Oratorio

THE PLAY:
This is not your traditional Christmas carol. Written in 1942, Auden's For the Time Being uses contemporary language to retell the stories of the birth of Jesus with audacity and wit. The poet/playwright borrows from the tradition of medieval mystery plays in grounding this secular and often comic version of the Nativity. A cast of eleven plays the parts of Mary, Joseph, the Three Wise Men, Herod, soldiers and shepherds. All are somewhat baffled by the miracle that equally exhilarates and challenges them. And so are all of us, temporarily buoyed up by the joy of Christmas, half-hopeful, somewhat skeptical, left with the task of infusing the rest of the year ("the time being") with meaning and hope, reconciling the miraculous with the mundane. Though rooted in Christianity, Auden's parable speaks to the dilemma of all who crave hope in a winter of the spirit. In TAG's unique production, concert reading scenes are bridged by traditional art and music as well as contemporary art by Josef Stolorz and Hawaii artist Ria Keltz-Remenar.
