  • Official HawaiiSlam - Press Release: Another quality show coming on November 5th, 2009

PRESS RELEASE:

The 7th official HawaiiSlam season rolls on with its monthly qualifiers at First Thursdays (November 5th, 2009). The top two poets will qualify for the HawaiiSlam Finals in April 2010 that will determine the team to represent Hawaii at the 2010 National Poetry Slam in Saint Paul, MN.

The special features for this show are Ed Mabrey and the Girl Fest Sneak Peek. Ed Mabrey is an Individual World Poetry Slam Champion whose work has been used in art exhibits at The Whitney Museum. He has been in three major motion pictures and has had a starring role in a made for television movie on both Fox and ABC. The Girl Fest Sneak Peek will consist of short sets by performance artists from the 6th Annual Girl Fest Hawai`i. The artists will be Ali Wong (SF Weekly's best comedian of 2009) and Lauren Silva (Soulful Rock/Jazz/Hip-hop fusion). As always, the night will be hosted by Kealoha, and will feature live painters, massages in the lounge, and DJ Kee will provide turntable sorcery throughout the evening.

Pipeline Cafe is located at 805 Pohukaina Street (near intersection with Cooke St). Doors open at 7:30pm, and the show starts at 8:30pm. Admission is $3 before 8:30pm and $5 after. For more info, check out the website at www.HawaiiSlam.com, send an email to info@HawaiiSlam.com, or call 387-9664.

Poets/performers: you will only need one piece to compete, as we will only be doing one round of performances. The three-minute rule is still in effect. You do not have to break the rules to get up on the mic, but just know that you can (poet selection will be primarily random as usual). There will be 4 microphones, a DJ with his/her equipment, and one 1/4" cord to plug in basic instruments. If you have more sound requirements, bring your own equipment to make it happen. That being said, you have 30 seconds to set up... do not make us wait for you!! You can be in more than one piece if you are helping someone else out with theirs.

Doors open at 7:30pm, and the show starts at 8:30pm. Admission is $3 before 8:30pm and $5 after. For more info, check out the website at www.HawaiiSlam.com, send an email to info@HawaiiSlam.com, or call 387-9664.
