September Schedule of Public Programs at
TCM
The Contemporary Museum's schedule of September
programs and special offers include Expression Sessions for kids, gallery talks,
contemporary dance performance and workshop, military family outreach,
docent-guided tours, and a special free offer for twenty-somethings. Most
programs at TCM are free with museum entry and feature artists and special guest
art educators. Public programs are as follows:
The Contemporary Museum at Makiki
Heights:
Expression Session - September 5, 10:30 a.m. -
Reservations: (808) 237-5230; $12; $7 Members; Natural Elements: Earth, Sun, and
Water with Shanda Freitas The Contemporary
Museum's Expression Sessions (art classes for kids 5-12) are held on the first
Saturday of every month (except July) from 10:30 a.m. - Noon. This month, art
educator Shanda Freitas explores the theme, Natural Elements: Earth, Sun and
Water. Take a nature walk through the fabulous Nu'umealani Gardens at TCM. Hunt
for twigs, leaves, flowers, pebbles and other objects you will use to create
your own nature prints. The prints are made on special photographic paper that
undergoes a chemical change when exposed to sunlight. This is a fun
end-of-summer project for kids 5-12. Fees to participate are $12 per person,
($7 for TCM members). Reservations are required and may be made by calling (808)
237-5230 or email <mailto:education@tcmhi.org>education@tcmhi.org.
Expression Sessions through December are sponsored in memory of Hiram Chung by
one of his family members.

Earth and Spirit, drawing on their many years of training in dance, meditation,
and improvisation. The dance will be performed in the galleries of the
exhibition, Yoshihiro Suda, a hyper-realistic minimalist display of hand-carved,
hand-painted botanicals by Japanese artist Yoshihiro Suda. The presentation is

in August at
<http://www.smithsonianmagazine.com>www.smithsonianmagazine.com. The
Museum Day Admission Card is good for one-day use only on September 26, 2009 at

portrait competition held in Australia. The exhibition was organized and
presented by the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, and has become a showcase of
outstanding Hawaii artists and a chronicle of the changing face of Hawaii. The
selected portraits include a broad range of interpretation and styles-from
representational to experimental in drawing, painting, and sculpture-all of
which reveal the rewards of observation and the essence of human connections.
Portrait subjects include people of all ages who represent the multicultural
profile of Hawaii and their compelling stories, seen through the artists'
portrayals.
