Current Art Exhibitions At The Hawaii State Art Museum

HAWAI'I STATE FOUNDATION ON CULTURE AND THE ARTS

For Immediate Release: April 30, 2009

ART EXHIBITIONS AT THE HAWAI'I STATE ART MUSEUM

HONOLULU -- The Hawai'i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (HSFCA) is pleased to announce this update on all of the art exhibitions that are currently on display at the Hawai'i State Art Museum.

Accession '09
Opens May 1, 2009; Thru January 16, 2010
Following the closing of the Scholastic Art Exhibition in the Diamond Head Gallery, Accession '09 is a continuation of the main Accession exhibition. This addition will feature the newest art acquired for the Art in Public Places program including relocatable works of art and commissions.

Accession: Recent Acquisitions from the Art in Public Places Collection
Thru July 18, 2009
This exhibition showcases recent purchases, commissions, and gifts demonstrating the exceptional work collected by the Hawai'i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts for the Art in Public Places Collection. Some of the featured artists include Reiko Brandon, Kenneth Bushnell, Charles Higa, Jerry Okimoto, Laura Smith, and Toshiko Takaezu.

Fragments: Representing the Body
Thru July 31, 2009
This exhibition shows depictions of the body in parts and segments rather than as coherent wholes. By deliberate absences, cropping, and abstracting aspects of the body, artists redefine and transform the human form with unique visions that ensure the viewer's engagement with the body via new perspectives.

He Alo A He Alo Face to Face, Visions and Portraits of Hawai'i
Thru September 12, 2009
This exhibition features visionary artwork and portraits from the Art in Public Places Collection, which includes over 5,000 works of art by more than 1,400 artists that have been acquired since the collection began in 1967. Themes are Hawaiian heritage, Asian roots, social consciousness, and cultural traditions.

I Love Art Gallery -- Educational Space on Elements of Art and Design
(Gallery is modified for each new exhibition.)
This educational gallery lets visitors learn about art as artists do -- by touching, observing, exploring, thinking, and reading. The gallery focuses on the structure of art-making through the elements of art and design (such as line, shape, form, space, and texture) with hands-on activities to experience art materials.

The following exhibitions -- 46th Annual Hawai'i Regional Scholastic Art Awards 2009, Palolo Kids and Friends, Intertwine: A Selection of Hawai'i Fiber Art, uncommon objects, and Enriched by Diversity: The Art of Hawai'i -- have closed and are no longer on display in our galleries.
