University of Hawaii Art Gallery schedule 2008-2009

September 2008 - May 2009 Schedule of Exhibitions

Writing with Thread: Traditional Textiles of Southwest Chinese Minorities
September 21 - November 30, 2008
Download PDF

Creating spectacular embroidery and textiles seems to be the life mission of the minority women in the harsh mountainous region of Southwest China--Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou, and the bordering provinces. Although their work has remained relatively unknown to this day, their stunning artistry comes to life in the outstanding exhibition Writing with Thread, on loan from Evergrand Art Museum in Taiwan. Shown in the United States for the first time, more than 500 pieces of significant clothing and silver ornaments from 15 ethnic minority groups and nearly 100 subgroups from southwest China were selected from the collection of over 11,000 rare and historically important pieces. Unmatched in the world, the entire collection includes embroidered costumes, baby carriers, tie-dye textiles, matching silver ornaments, weaving paraphernalia, and documentation of the artisans. A 360-page catalogue that features scholarly essays and images of many of the costumes will be published. Writing with Thread serves as the fulcrum for the Textile Society of America Biennial Symposium (www.textilesociety.org) that will be held September 24 - 27, 2008 in Honolulu. Museums and galleries throughout the city will present textile-related exhibitions in conjunction with the symposium.

Graduate Exhibition
January 18 - February 13, 2009
The graduate art students of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Department of Art and Art History, present their annual exhibition of new work. The exhibition includes the graduate students' most recent works in painting, ceramics, fiber, glass, photography, design, printmaking, sculpture, and electronic media.

The 10th International Shoebox Sculpture Exhibition
March 1 - April 9, 2009
Good things come in small packages . . . This exhibition is one of our most popular exhibitions for the young and young-at-heart alike. Approximately 150 diverse sculptures from around the world, each no bigger than a shoebox, show how artists handle the challenges of space and scale dictated by the size of a shoebox. Cast metal, carved wood, glass, fiber, feathers, paper, clay, and found objects are just a few of the many materials used by the artists to create their works. Half of the sculptures will be selected for the traveling exhibition that will be on view at venues in the U.S. and abroad. An exhibition catalogue will be published.
