  • Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce Sponsors 30th Annual "Commitment to Excellence" Art Exhibition

Honolulu, HI -- The Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce (HJCC) is seeking entries from local artists for the HJCC 30th Annual "Commitment to Excellence" Art Exhibition opening August 19, 2008, at the Academy Art Center at Linekona. The Exhibition will feature an exciting mix of works by both new and seasoned artists. Approximately 80 -- 100 pieces will be displayed from emerging artists and invited artists.

The 2008 Exhibition will once again honor one of Hawaii's great master artists for their lifetime of artistic excellence. This year, the HJCC is featuring renowned artist Harry Tsuchidana. Tsuchidana, whose works have graced Hawai'i and international galleries and homes for over 50 years, will have about 5 paintings displayed at the show.

The 30th Annual Art Exhibition will run from August 19 to August 28, 2008. Admission is free. Three distinguished jurists, Grant Kagimoto, James Jenson, and Lisa Yoshihara will select 60 -- 80 works from an expected 500+ entries.

Interested artists should submit their works to the Academy Art Center at Linekona on August 11 - 12, 2008, between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Accepted entrants will be notified on August 13, 2008.

A $1000 "Award of Excellence" prize will be presented to the most outstanding work by a juried-in entrant. Cash awards will be given for lst place ($500), 2nd place ($300), 3rd place ($200), Honorable Mention ($75), and a Newcomer Award ($100) for two and three dimensional category works.

Entry specifications include: two and three dimensional media, pieces must be ready "wired" for installation, and the artist's sale price must be determined prior to date of entry. Two-dimensional works must be no larger than 5 feet x 7 feet (height and width) Three-dimensional works can be no larger than 6 feet x 6 feet x 6 feet. The weight of each work shall not exceed 300 pounds. Works exhibited in previous HJCC art exhibitions are ineligible. A fee of $10.00 per entry will be charged.

The Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce was established in 1900 and is one of Honolulu's major business organizations. Its purpose is to provide its members with the leadership and organization to promote Hawaii's business and economic development, in Hawaii and Japan. The Chamber also provides its members awareness and involvement in government affairs affecting business and the community general. The Chamber's membership represents a cross-section of the city's businesses, industries, and professions.
