GALLERY WALK-THROUGH WITH THE ARTISTS IN"PARENTHESES"
Sunday, February 10, 12:00-2:00 p.m.

What:

Showing off their current works in their exhibition PARENTHESES, the graduate students from the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa invite the public to talk and walk with them through the gallery. More than twenty artists are presenting their work in ceramics, painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, intermedia, glass, and fiber.

Nostalgia and recollections of amusement parks and fairs inspired Allison Uttley to create an installation of a child's birthday party from the 1950s. At 12:30 p.m. a few people can join Uttley's party of an imagined past. In a 15-minute performance, participants will be asked to poke their heads and hands through holes in panels painted with images of eight kids in party hats. The artist hopes that as the participants assume a role of one of the children at the party and eat cake, they will question their memories and identities.Ê

The viewer gets a "bug's-eye view" with a pair of paintings of imposing 14-foot high figures by Japan-born Scoop Brancisco. Forced to walk between the paintings in order to see them, the viewer discovers the scrutinizing gaze of the figures and the sense of vulnerability they create. The artist states, " . . . the paintings talk and blame me for whatever existence I have turned them into . . . I am starting to turn into the victim."
