  • Official HawaiiSlam - Press Release: Another quality show coming on January 3rd, 2008

PRESS RELEASE:
he 5th official HawaiiSlam season rolls on with its monthly qualifiers at First Thursdays (January 3rd, 2008). The top two poets will qualify for the HawaiiSlam Finals in April 2008 that will determine the team to represent Hawaii at the 2008 National Poetry Slam in Madison, WI.

Our feature poet for this evening is Jon Sands from New York City. Sands was a member of the LouderARTS New York City slam team that placed 3rd out of 76 teams at the 2007 National Poetry Slam. A leading voice in the next generation of poetry, he has authored two chapbooks, In its Own Imaginative Engine (2006) and Being Human Being (2007). Blending youthful idealism with forceful passion and a drop of fire, Sands' work probes society and self in search of our most difficult answers. As always, the night will be hosted by Kealoha, and will feature live painters and DJ Toki (Sisters in Sound) providing turntable sorcery throughout the evening.

First Thursdays is the largest registered poetry slam in the world (attendance of 600+), and takes place at the Hawaiian Hut on every first Thursday of the month. Hawaiian Hut is located on the Ala Moana Hotel grounds, near the diamond head side of the Ala Moana shopping center. Doors open at 7:45pm, and the show starts at 8:30pm. Admission is $3 before 8:30pm and $5 after. For more info, check out the website at www.HawaiiSlam.com, send an email to info@HawaiiSlam.com, or call 387-9664.
