The HawaiiSlam Team is Ranked 19th and Kealoha is Ranked 8th in the Nation!!

PRESS RELEASE:

For the third year in a row, team HawaiiSlam has made it to the semi-finals at the 2007 National Poetry Slam (NPS)!! This was the fourth year that Hawaii sent a team up to the NPS, and it was the largest team poetry slam in history with legendary slam poets and HBO Def Poets competing for top honors in Austin, TX.

The 2007 HawaiiSlam team included Lyz Soto, Darron Cambra, Stri Longanecker, and Kealoha, a team comprised of 3 rookies and 1 veteran. In a pool of 75 teams, they finished 19th as they faced top-seeded teams from New York, Texas, Michigan, and Illinois. Their momentum was finally stopped when they lost their Semi-Finals match to team Killeen (Texas), who ended up taking 2nd place in the entire competition.

In addition to the teamâs success, Kealoha placed 8th out of the entire field of 325+ poets in individual competition. He represented Hawaii on the Individual Finals stage, an honor shared by the top ten poets of the 2007 competition. In the 18-year history of the National Poetry Slam, only 84 distinct poets have made it to the Individual Finals stage out of a pool of thousands.

HawaiiSlam continues on with its First Thursdays poetry slam. We are currently in our official 2007-2008 season, where the 5th HawaiiSlam team will be selected to represent Hawaii at the 2008 National Poetry Slam in Madison, Wisconsin.
