The Art Board Gallery Presents:
"Winds of Mayumi"
Porcelain Painting Exhibition

The Art Board would like to invite you to share with us this rare opportunity to witness a lost art. Mayumi Sato, an extraordinary porcelain painter opens her collection to us with a reception on Thursday August 9, 2007 from 5:30pm-7:30pm. This wonderful exhibit will be open from Friday August 10th and Saturday August 11th from 10am-6pm.

Mayumi Sato has been painting porcelain china for about twenty years in Japan. She first started studying this fine art at the cultural center in Tokyo for about four years until fate led her to Mr. Toshiro Ishii who worked for Royal Copenhagen in Denmark as a porcelain painter for over ten years. She joined him as a student and recalls that was the major turning point in her career. Mayumi's concept of porcelain painting is "china for everyday use". To bring the porcelain alive it gives character to whatever may be on it. Mayumi explains "if there is a bird on your tea pot, you might feel like using it in the morning bright and early while looking out the window. Also once I painted a shrimp on a dinner plate imagining seafood pasta would be served on it! The imagination never ceases!"

Mayumi has traveled all over the world, but she has always loved Hawaii for its natural state of beauty. "Everything looks lively and beautiful in Hawaii." She explains, "My paintings have always been inspired by art design books, photos, museum antiques and gardens in Japan and Denmark, but there's something about Hawaii. Visiting Hawaii brings me something I never experienced in my life before. I'm not too sure what it is, I wonder if it's the wind, sunshine or people. I am sure that experiencing Hawaii has already inspired me in many ways for my paintings."

Mayumi continues to paint today and shares her talent to her students in her hometown of Japan spreading her legacy and keeping the art of porcelain painting alive.
