  • Official HawaiiSlam - Press Release: Another quality show coming on July 5th.

PRESS RELEASE:
First Thursdays continues its "no rules" summer with another quality show on July 5th. All team pieces, musical accompaniment, props, etc. are ALLOWED. However, the 3 minute time rule will still remain in effect. Also, the after party for the slam will be the SIQ Union Summer Tour kickoff, with Tempo Valley, Hunger Pains, The Spacifics, and Creed Chameleon. This is a long awaited partnership between HawaiiSlam and some of Hawaii's best underground hip-hop crews.

The feature for the slam is Bryonn Bain (www.bryonnbain.com). Bain was wrongfully imprisoned by the NYPD during his second year at Harvard law school. He then sued the City of New York, was interviewed by Mike Wallace on CBS' "60 Minutes," and wrote the Village Voice cover story - "Walking While Black: The Bill of Rights for Black America" - which drew the largest response in the history of the nation's most widely-read progressive newspaper. Bain was the Nuyorican Grand Slam Champion in 2000, and has shared stages with The Last Poets, Amiri Baraka, Sonia Sanchez, Run DMC, and Dead Prez. He is currently teaching courses exploring hip hop, spoken word poetry and the prison industrial complex at Columbia University, and also hosts BET-J's leading talk show "My Two Cents" on air each week in 27 million homes nationwide. As always, the night will be hosted by Kealoha, and will feature live painters, massages in the lounge, and a guest DJ providing turntable sorcery throughout the evening.

Hawaiian Hut is located on the Ala Moana Hotel grounds, near the diamond head side of the Ala Moana shopping center. Doors open at 7:45pm, and the show starts at 8:30pm. Admission is $3 before 8:30pm and $5 after. For more info, check out the website at www.HawaiiSlam.com, send an email to info@HawaiiSlam.com, or call 387-9664.
