10/1/2012 - This painting was created as a poster for the Conservation Council for Hawai‘i, which will soon be printed and distributed to hundreds of schools throughout Hawai‘i with educational text on the poster back. It depicts an anchialine pond, many of which are scattered along the Kona Coast and connected by volcanic tunnels and crevasses. Native species inhabiting the pond include small shrimp (‘öpae), mollusks, and sea grass, which are part of this obscure yet dynamic ecosystem that often goes unnoticed. On land the ‘ülili (wandering tattler) peers into the pond and native plants surround its borders. Hualälai is majestic in the distance.
