First Friday: Slack Key with Ron Loo

Let Loo's sweet nahenahe guitar style enchant you.

Friday, September 4, 6 - 9 p.m., Hawai‘i State Art Museum, Free,

Please join us September 4 for First Friday at the Hawai‘i State Art Museum. This month we present Ron Loo with his old style ki ho‘alu or slack-key guitar.

As a teacher of slack key, Ron has touched the lives of many people of Hawai‘i by passing on his knowledge and perpetuki ho‘aluating his art form. Come and hear some sweet music and Ron's entertaining and sometimes historic background stories of his family, friends and colleagues. And be sure to explore the galleries and visit the opening night of our special 50th anniversary exhibition HAWAI‘I: Change & Continuity.

For First Friday in October, come back for a great night of music with guitarist Dayton Watanabe. Dayton is a favorite here at HiSAM, experienced in both slack-key and standard tunings.

*FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC!!!*

Public parking available at Ali‘i Place (Alakea Street entrance) and Iolani Palace.

NEW EXHIBITION - Hawai‘i: Change & Continuity

HAWAI‘I: CHANGE & CONTINUITY

Hawai‘i State Art Museum
Ewa Gallery
September 4, 2015 -- TBD

The State Foundation on Culture and the Arts will open a new exhibition "Hawaii: Change & Continuity" on September 4, 2015, at the Hawai‘i State Art Museum as part of our 50th anniversary celebrations. The exhibition will feature selected artworks from the SFCA's Art in Public Places Collection.

The 50th anniversary exhibition explores how artistic expressions define the character of our changing civilization and how artists define our aspirations and make a profound contribution toward explaining who we are.

As civilizations change, it is artistic expressions that define their character. In Hawai‘i, the creative efforts of our artists make a profound contribution toward explaining who we are and defining our aspirations. Through the works of artists we come to better know ourselves.
