Coming up for the May 3rd First Friday, the Hawai‘i State Art Museum welcomes the Papana Group, a jazz ensemble from the United States Air Force Band of the Pacific -- Hawai‘i.

Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawai‘i, is home to the U.S. Air Force Band of the Pacific -- Hawaii. Historically, the 35-piece unit performed for base and community functions from 1947 to 1975. During the draw down following the Vietnam War, the band was deactivated. With the establishment of the Headquarters of the Pacific Air Forces, the 17-piece United States Air Force Band of the Pacific -- Hawai‘i was created.

Chief Master Sergeant Laura C. Noel, a vocalist, leads this well-respected band and oversees the 17 band members as they travel and perform throughout the Pacific region. Don't miss this opportunity to catch the U.S. Air Force Band of the Pacific -- Hawai‘i at the Hawai‘i State Art Museum from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

A big mahalo to Partners in Time for their appearance at HiSAM on April 5, 2013. With special New York City guests Souren Baronian and Haig Manoukian, Partners in Time played their mixture of jazz, Balkan, Near and Middle Eastern music to a very appreciative capacity crowd in our Sculpture Lobby.

Join us in June when the Hawai‘i State Art Museum welcomes back the Hawai‘i Youth Symphony. The last time the Youth Symphony performed here, they brought their alumni and it was a true delight! In celebration and conclusion of its 48th season, HYS will present chamber ensembles at HiSAM as part of its Alumni Chamber Music Series. The Series features performers who participated in HYS as youth; many of whom have gone on to careers as professional musicians, and others who are simply lifelong music lovers. The repertoire will include popular and classical favorites, some new and contemporary music, and perhaps even a tango or two. Kicking off the performance will be a wind quintet featuring HYS's newest alums from the Class of 2013.

The galleries of HiSAM will be open during your visit.

Galleries are open from 6 to 8:45 p.m. on First Friday. As the museum's supply of chairs are limited, low folding chairs and mats are recommended at the second floor open courtyard, which overlooks the newly opened Sculpture Garden. Don't miss this special treat
